The Ref Stop

Goalkeeper picking ball up twice in youth games.

Please explain for regular readers the difference between a penalty and a penalty kick. Thanks.
A penalty is a punishment on a team from a offense (foul). A penalty kick though, is a kick taken on the penalty spot with one on one keeper vs kicker. No players other than the kicker and goalie are allowed in the penalty area and arc. It is used to punish an offense from the defending team in their own penalty area. But there are some exceptions like goalie handball in his own penalty area.

Same in the US. We avoid “penalty” outside of PKs to avoid confusion.
But we do use penalise for punishments. Like a penalty for a team refusing to pay referees (just a general example). But I guess in soccer if just radomly say "penalty!", everyone will assume you are talking about a pen kick.
