To be fair I’ve just watched yesterdays decisions and both do not look like ‘obvious’ red cards on first viewing.
But yes - I think it’s easier for them and helps them save face if they give a yellow that gets upgraded than give a red that’s downgraded.

Both are clear reds on replay, but I don’t believe either are howlers to have missed in real time, though I’d be disappointed in missing the second one in real time especially given the defender leapt off the ground and went in two-footed.
Fulham’s manager was, as ever, a dick post-match (saw no evidence of a red card challenge!) but Anderson was far classier…

I could maybe accept the first one of getting it wrong although the assistant is right there and perhaps should of seen where the point of contact was but the second one Im struggling too see how a PL ref can get that one wrong when he's staring right at it and it felt like he tried to cop out of it by pulling it back for the previous infringment.
One thing I have noticed especially this season is there has not been many SFP incidents for the officials to deal with so maybe that could be a factor why SG1 refs do struggle to identify when a red card tackle does occur.
Good use of VAR though and that should be highlighted especially when it's a lower league referee basically telling a FIFA/PL ref you have made two clear and obvious errors.

Not quite how I’m seeing it, but definitely think there’s an issue around serious foul play recognition.
First one I needed a replay, second one is the sort of challenge we can’t yellow card at our level, let alone at elite level. I’m in disbelief that that was “played safe”.
As for Marco Silva not thinking it’s a red card, words fail me.

I think the same but I would like to see some statistical evidence if anyone can find them.
Number of post VAR straight reds per season without VAR intervention, vs the number of straight reds per season pre VAR.
To be fair to the referees on the announcements, some refs will no doubt be confident and there be some refs won't be(I mean must be daunting having so many eyes and ears focused on you when doing those announcements) so Madley perhaps keeping it simple instead of potentially going into a monologue and tripping over his own words kept it simple but of course it meant there is no context to it.
