Freekick kicked at defender

The avuncular one
had one of them off ones today that players simply have no understanding of the laws of the game.

Freekick to red just about in reds half. A yellow is walking away from the ball talking to me. A smart assed red kicks the ball (not hard) against the retreating yellow claiming a caution. Another red then picks up the ball.

Award the freekick to yellow for handball. Cue mass moaning. "He wasn't 10 yards ref!" He wasn't, they are right. He was also walking away from the ball before the red kicked it at him.

Didn't help that yellow punt a long ball into the area and score. Thanks football gods for that. :)

had the yellow player been Argentinian, would the Belgrano rule have kicked in, I wonder?

Ha ha it's standard isn't it that when you make an apparently controversial call the other team score straight of it. I've given trying to explain the laws of the game to players as they still think you're wrong. I'm missing my weekend pembrokeshire football, only get to ref on Wednesday out here in Germany.

But doesn't the red free kick have to be retaken because the player wasn't 10 yards away?

Nope, says somewhere in the LOTG that the taking of free kicks is at the player's discretion or something like that - ie if he wants a quick FK it's his risk, especially if the defender isn't watching.

EDIT: Just checked, it should only be retaken if the player deliberately blocks the ball (also a yellow for delaying the restart of play).

Just found it In the magic book,

"If a player decides to take a free kick quickly and an opponent who is less than 9.15 m (10 yds) from the ball intercepts it, the referee must allow play to continue."
