The Ref Stop

First Game!

Whilst any game is good experience for cadets, particularly young referees, i don't consider my son's games an 'appointment', i just take to the middle because everyone knows i'm qualified
It's not my nature to worry about the little things in life and will never think twice before playing shoe lace roulette. At that age, it feels more like child minding than refereeing to me, (excluding games when the kids are very decent)

Up to U10 in small field games we have "game supervisors" rather than refs in nearly all games. They tend to be 14-16 years old starter refs or sports students or volunteers. They wear a green vest rather than ref top. They only stand out when they are overly officious. Seems to work around here.

Anyway, good luck with the first games. Smile and take your time. Don't let the coaches get to you if they get mouthy - and do tell them off if they start to take liberties. Enjoy.
 
I never thought I'd see a debate about 9 year olds shoe lace tie up. But again this is a referee forum and if we can describe it by words we debate it.

On another very important matter. When I enter the field, should I lead with my left foot or my right foot?

Just put your best foot first
 
After playing football at a decent level for the most of 20 years I am refereeing my first game this coming Sunday.

It's an under 14s game. Really looking forward to getting underway.

I must say, I thought your goal against Bayern in that Champions League Final a few years back was top drawer!! :D

I think someone should tell him there isn't much money in refereeing, he'd be better off continuing as a manager if he can get a gig.

I did my first game not so long back, u11's. I forgot to count the number of players on each side before kick off so hastily did it in a break of play (corner) I also found that alot of the "challenges" were just players clumsily running into each other.

I was early, did pitch check, had all the right equipment and made an effort to look the part and that went down a treat with both coaches as they felt that refs at this age group never usually put that effort in.

I like the advice that most give, make sure you give it an assertive blast of the whistle to call in captains.
