The Ref Stop

Do you think this goal should stand?

The Ref Stop
By the strict letter of the law, no, it should be a retake for encroachment by players of both teams. However, it's the scale of encroachment that typically goes unpunished and so in my opinion it should stand .. whilst the initial taker is in an offside position when the scoring shot is struck and could be deemed to be interfering with play through being in the GK's line of vision, I feel this would be harsh given that he is on the ground!

If it is universally acknowledged that referees at the highest levels can't be @rsed to apply this particular lotg, why don't they just scrap the relevant law at the next review

As someone who has insisted on a retake more than once for encroachment, you really wanna be sure you can cope with the resulting backlash!

There is a backlash, in case that bit wasn't clear. :)

only ever ordered one retake - goal scored, attacker in the area

no backlash - tho the keeper was clearly bemused that he was being given another chance

i always remind the rest of the players to 'stay out of the box' or words to that effect before signalling the kick

So what do you think? Would you have actually ordered a retake in this example ....?
