Dissent, ball in play

Can I tag on to this for an incident in my game yesterday.

50/50 challenge, no foul committed by either player. The attacking blue decided he didn't like the challenge and got up and pushed the defending red +then tried to square up to him. I blew and cautioned for AA. Ball still in play.

Was I right to start with an IDFK to defending red?

DFK. Take away the initial 50/50 for the moment and imagine all you see is a push somewhere on the field. Easy DFK. The fact there’s a challenge before is irrelevant as you adjudged it to be no foul

Okay. It was off the ball as it was in possession elsewhere so that's why I erred on the side of indirect. Thankfully no one questioned it, and the game was 5-1 in the 90th minute. So all but over it.

Noted for future.

Yeah a weird one but useful to remember thst if there’s some form of contact, you’re going for a DFK. We learn for future games!

Yep. DFK as explained above.

IFK if there was no push or the push was below careless and you stopped play to caution for AA.

Law 12.2:
An indirect free kick is awarded if a player: commits any other offence, not mentioned in the Laws, for which play is stopped to caution or send off a player

Had an interesting one a couple of seasons ago. Adult Ladies game, two players (one from each team) start shouting at each other. Worried it might escalate I blew the whistle and run in to calm them down. They both started to walk away, then one lady turned back and made a nasty comment on my abilities as a referee. I cautioned her for dissent and restarted with IFK to the other team. At the end of the game another ref, waiting to take on the next match, quietly pointed out (quite correctly I think), that it should really have been a dropped ball as I did not stop the game to give the caution.

What do the LOTG say?
They say this:
All free kicks are taken from the place where the offence occurred, except:
• indirect free kicks to the attacking team for an offence inside the opponents’ goal area are taken from the nearest point on the goal area line which runs parallel to the goal line
• free kicks to the defending team in their goal area may be taken from anywhere in that area
• free kicks for offences involving a player entering, re-entering or leaving the field of play without permission are taken from the position of the ball when play was stopped. However, if a player leaves the field of play as part of play and commits an offence against another player, play is restarted with a free kick taken on the boundary line nearest to where the offence occurred; for direct free kick offences a penalty kick is awarded if this is within the offender’s penalty area
• the Law designates another position (see Laws 3, 11, 12)

I'm not sure I've actually blown the whistle for dissent. If it's ever occurring whilst the ball is in play, I normally give a shout of 'OK 6, I'm coming back' and when the ball is out of play, call them over.
Apply it like advantage. If, say, Blue Team are attacking and the blue defender 40 yards back dissents, you HAVE to stop play rather than let them continue with the ball.

The worst case outcome would be if you allowed it to continue and the blue team scored, then you go back and caution for the dissent.

As per "determining the outcome of the match', a condition of a goal is that no offence has been committed by the team scoring. Thus, allowing the goal then cautioning for dissent by that team that occurred in the lead-up would be a breach of the law - thus would be a KMI failure for knowledge of the law.

Always remember that on the ball or off the ball has absolutely nothing to do with the type of restart.

Correct. Actions while the ball is out of play cannot change a restart (except where specified, eg PK encroachment)
