I think the point about fighting for survival is fair enough. He does owe it to the fans and the club to do all he can to stay up, and losing Carroll for three games will pretty much relegate them I think, so I can't blame a Chairman for defending his club.

Although, it could be a psychological ploy to develop an 'us against them' mentality. Knowing it will get him nowhere in terms of the red card, but perhaps give Allardyce a bit more to motivate with in the dressing room.

I'm not sure 75% of the FA would say it's not a red though, so far, the only people I've heard saying that are WHUFC!
 
I'll bet that they're p'ing themselves laughing in the red half of Sheffield
