It is sometimes a myth on how appointments are made, but as others have said, if you are available for games, scoring well in club marks then you will get noticed. In my first 2 seasons I got an AR and a middle in my local Sunday league competition but nothing at County level but I didn't expect to having only been a relative novice.
I was also officiating in the county youth league and was appointed as an AR in one of their U16 finals which I was excited about. When I got there and spoke with the referee, who I happened to know before he moved further away in the county he was surprised why he got the middle having never officiated in that league in his entire refereeing career.
Where I am, and in the local leagues I officiate we have only had 2 referees appointed to any county games in the last 2 seasons and that was because they were both on the promotion scheme.
