The Ref Stop

Craig Pawson Pen

The Ref Stop
Yip pk, well done AR and for anybody still questioning the validity of refs making unauthorised signals in the guise of communication, then what a good example.

Much more importantly though, given its a cross breed of Gazza and Ant and Dec as the commentator, I cant make him out, but, earlier in the clip, Neymar is

"Offside by a frogs tail?"

Any of our Tyne and Wear colleagues able to confirm if said amphibians have swum in too much Newcastle Broon and have indeed grown tails?

Also pleasing to see a Wallace in the Brazil team, he must have strangely rejected the offer of turning out for Scotland againgst Albania and Israel this weekend....

That's where I don't agree with how comms are used though. Once the assistant has told the referee it is a penalty he should be flagging and moving to the corner flag. Without that action it makes it look as though Pawson changed his mind based on player reaction.

I think this is a mess. I'm not Mr P's number one fan as you might already know
The Geordie phraseology is 'atypical' !

It appears the right call, and that's what we all want to see. No VAR needed
Just a tuned in lino with the courage to make the correct decision

The cutting the grass thing is a shambles though.

Ref "that's not a pen" (shows the whole world he is not giving it)
AR "yes it is"
Ref "oh ok, I said it was not a pk but really it is"

credible? Onus on AR to call things for remainder of game? Onus now on other AR to call the shots in a similar situation because now the players have in reality lost a bit of faith in the ref?

Agree - what I find odd is it's not even a convincing cutting the grass - his arms are just flailing out

The layman's solution is simple. Don't do it in the first place.

Been quoted on here lots but its same as pointing to the ball in a vain attempt to indicate a good tackle, only for you to see on reflection in the debrief, not only was it a foul, it was a yc too. And there is you, pointing away, thinking you are being a good communicator...

if its not a foul, simply, don't whistle. There is the global signal for "it's not a foul"

To quote a karaoke song of mine. ###...."You say it best.....when you say nothing at all " ######

In Mr P's defense, I ain't giving this PK either. The contact looks feather-like, the offender tries to pull out, but most importantly, the exaggerated reaction implies cheating; and I have very sensitive cheat detecting whiskers

You have to be La creme de la creme to beat his feline mince pies!

True.....except here the ref has already said 'no' by the grasscutting. So you typically don't want the AR making an overt signal in that case, IMO.
