Correct in law?

Scenario from my game yesterday.. mens.

Ball comes in from a corner, defensive player 2 hand pushes attacker in back who then goes into the back of another defensive player as a result. Another attacking player then heads the ball into the net.

I gave the goal. Was I correct in law for doing this? Assuming the attacking Foul was not a foul as he was pushed into the other defensive player.

Incidentally, the defensive player on the floor did not see the original push and this ended up in two of their players being binned by me for dissent so they went down to 9

The attacker didn't commit an offence because he wasn't careless or more than careless.

In football ‘careless’ means "show[ing] a lack of attention or consideration when making a challenge or act[ing] without precaution."

Thank you all - I could have given a penalty straight away and having read the forum about not playing advantage in the area I could have — having said that I tend to wait slightly longer for a push like that as the ball is still in the air.

I suppose the point is here - the attacking player did barge into a defensive player although he was pushed himself .. does that mean he did not commit a foul because he was pushed? If he did commit a foul is the advantage for him over at this moment and therefore back to original penalty for attacking player.

Difficult decision and I’m so glad that I have built experience in waiting until making a decision - this really helped.

there is poetic justice

but indeed, no part of playing advantage involves bowling over another opponent, pushed or not.....

Think the advantage and goal sounds like the absolute correct thing to do in terms of the spirit of the game, and I don't think it's particularly difficult to justify in law terms either. Good call and well done for having a clear picture of what happened!

It doesn't really sound like an official advantage was played (signal and shout) but more of a wait and see what happens, which of course is fine and probably the best thing to do in that situation - the last thing you want to do is signal advantage and whilst you're doing it the shot gets blocked by another defender.

One of those unlucky situations for the referee to be in as you're damned if you do and damned if you don't (somebody is going to be aggrieved at the outcome regardless). From the picture I have of the incident described in my head, I think I'd have done the same thing and allowed the goal, explaining to the players that it would have been a penalty anyway, etc. etc.

Although one point to think about that makes the sell easier or a bit more difficult - did the defender that was bumped in to have a chance of challenging for the ball and stopping the subsequent goal before he was knocked over? Or did the ball fly over the melee and get knocked in at the back post? (which none of the players involved could have really done anything about anyway)
