Evening all. Looking for the wisdom and experience of other referee, looking for information around the considerations of the game, and explaining your decision to an assessor, player, or coach. We have DOGSO, 4 very clear considerations, but what about a handball, a push, a holding offence, SPA, what do you have bouncing around the head when these offences or non-offences are happening? What are you saying to sell the decision either way?

Not sure I fully understand your question. I think it can be split into different parts. How I ‘sell’ a decision to a player and how I explain a decision to an assessor could be very different depending on the situation.

If you give us a couple of specific examples I am sure people would be happy to give you some tips and one liners which help with game control, me included.

I'm still very, very new to all of this but I've found a simple "it looks to me that..." or "from my angle I saw..." and then a confident signal for whatever you're giving is the best way to sell a decision. I've had a couple of grumbles but a simple "like I said, from my angle..." and it's fine. Basically, acknowledging that it's a difficult one either way.

In terms of what's going through my head - a billion things! I imagine once I'm more experienced it'll ease up a bit but I find myself mentally shattered after a game. "Don't fall over in front of these people" is the main thing I'm thinking 😅 As for considerations when giving decisions, just give it as you see it. I find most of the time following your gut is the way to go (especially when you're as fat as me!)

You don’t want my advice on selling decisions lol but in terms of considerations, you need the, well, considerations. I don’t think they’ve been linked to before on this forum, so here’s a copy from the AFC. Fifa also has a similar one but not as 'presntable'. Both this and the one from Fifa are very old* so read them cautiously.

*5 to 10 years old but that's a lot with the rate of change in law in recent years.
In fact just noticed the year in the link, 2017.

Echoing others above, but on the pitch I’ll use variations of “To me…” / “From my angle…” / “What I saw was…” and then back it up with Law. “…a shirtpull that impeded the opponent” / “it was merely careless” / “it was a reckless trip” / “natural contact” / “stopping a promising attack” / “abusive” and so on.

No I think…

It was.

(In your opinion)
