Arsenal v Bayern all over again with a defender deliberately picking the ball up from the keeper and because the ball was 'live', the referee gives the penalty unlike in the Arsenal game.

One big difference here though was in the Arsenal incident, Gabriel was on the edge of the 6 yard box and I accept the more common sense decision of no pen(although in law it probably should be a pen) but in this case Mings was in his 18 yard box and I don't think he has been taking any goal kicks so a pen is the right decision for me.

What's the commentator talking about "common sense". It's a pen. End of. And i'm a Villa fan
Why would defenders throw the ball back, anyway...when it's at their feet ? 🤔
 
Just to elaborate why I think this is different is because I believe Gabriel was taking all the goal kicks in that game and as I say he was in his 6 yard box so I can accept the common sense view unlike Mings who have not been taking the goal kicks and was a bit outside the 6 yard box, it is simply the defender losing concentration and all the blame should be on him and not the referee.

One for you referees, was Mings fortunate not to receive a second yellow for deliberate handball?

Should it matter who normally takes the kicks, though ? Who's to say, the coaches or the team didn't want someone different to take them at that stage ?? That's a point...Forgot he was already on a yellow 🤔

Not really, just trying to think the logic of the referee in that Arsenal game but I will accept in the letter of the law, that Gabriel one should be a pen aswell.

Happy the pundits on TNT was more rational in their analysis of this incident unlike the co commentator who for some reason was blaming the VAR and called it farcical. I can't help but think the word farcical won't be used if it benefitted villa.

I think the law has changed this season I believe especially in Europe as I used too see quite often in European leagues a referee giving a yellow out after a handball penalty. I think if this happened last season, Mings may of been shown a second yellow.

Handball, be it deliberate or accidental is not a caution is isolation. No laws have changed in regards to this.

I seem to remember La Liga bringing in ‘guidance’ a few years back to say all handballs are a caution. But this doesn’t fit within the laws

La Liga have always exaggerated penalising handball. You get 5 years inside for HB DOGSO.
