Thoughts on the Trafford challenge?

Don't think its SFP but maybe DOGSO?

Didn't look great from the angle they showed on Sky

Second week and use of VAR is inconsistent. Surprise surprise.

Me thinks that is a clear VAR intervention for a DOGSO red anywhere that uses VAR outside the PL. will be interesting to see if Webb thinks it should have been.

Has anyone got a link? Just looked at the TNT highlights, but doesnt seem to be on there

Haven't found a good one. Happened around the 39th minute. Crew also missed a clear SPA foul about a yard outside the penalty area 10 seconds later. Not a great stretch for Bankes IMO.

Not sure if it is SFP - he manages to bend his leg just in time, but it is still a foul challenge and got to be an arguable DOGSO?

I saw this on MOTD and thought it looked nasty. Lifts his knee up.
Also it is handball outside the area.
So pick your red? DOGSO for the handball or SFP?

I don’t think that’s handball. If it were a defender challenging in the same way I don’t think people would expect it to be handball, so why should it be handball just because it’s a goalkeeper outside his area?

For the same reason a penalty was given last week. He comes out and is moving towards the ball. Clearly handles it. Arms in natural position kinda irrelevant as he is moving towards ball.
More important for me is he clearly raises his knee to take him out.

The difference is that last weeks the ball was coming from distance and he leaned in to its path. On this one, of course he’s moving towards the ball, he’s challenging for it, but his arm is in a position that’s totally normal for the action he’s undertaking.

This is very much in the subjective column for me. If it’s given on field it will not be overturned, and vice versa.

I can’t sell a handball to myself here; a DOGSO foul I could. Although my initial reaction was players colliding, through their natural momentum.

But seeing that raised knee block I could argue the case for a DOGSO foul, but not SFP.

Happily missed the game on holiday travels, no clue what was given (or not). Looks a pretty clear missed intervention for either dogso or sfp...take your pick...

It’s just not SFP. That would be an incredibly low bar to start with and you’d be lowering it even further if you’re asking VAR to recommend a review for it (on an SFP basis)

But the bar can’t be higher’d or lowered, as it doesn’t exist. PGMOL officials are very very inconsistent and generally quite poor when it comes to deciding on SFP. Have been for a very long time.

I’m on the fence with this one and feel the SFP question could go either way.

I’m not talking about a bar that’s been set by PGMO officials, I’m saying for anyone to think that is SFP it would set a very low bar, and then to suggest it’s so clearly and obviously SFP that a review should be recommended, your bar must be even lower.
If you think that’s SFP you must be seeing a lot of red cards in your games, and I say that as someone who’s had 3 reds in 5 games so far this season 🙈
Edit to add, ‘you’ in the context of the bottom half of my post isn’t a specific ‘you’, just a generalisation…
