I agree. He seemed to be very lenient on cards, then gave cards to Hugil and Flint for nothing really.
Got to say though, excellent decision by the assistant for Hugils goal. I thought he was at least a yard or 2 offside when Howson played the pass but he got it spot on!
My initial reaction was the same for the goal, but I must agree, excellent decision. Well battled to keep it alive too with the keeper coming out.
Mepham booking at the end was deserved. Stupid boy for throwing a tantrum (and the ball) towards the Middlesbrough player on the floor.
I still think Friend should have got booked mid way through second half. Think it was Clayton who also pulled back a midfielder on the break, free kick but no card. If I recall I think he done about 4 niggly fouls that went unpunished and it's those that should be punished for persistent.
I'd have given a free kick against Marcondes just before the goal for Brentford for simulation (and a card). He had a quick look, nothing given, so got up and won the corner which resulted in the goal.
I agree Hugill was only booked because of the frustrated reaction by Brentford players. Though I think if earlier cautions to Friend and one other for blatant pull (free kick given too) may have stopped any frustration in the referee by that point. Even Flints caution was I think harsh. What did he actuallygive it for as if it were for his elbow why not violent conduct as it was off the ball (and initially off camera but caught on others) as that is what the referee would have seen, but in my opinion Maupay made a meal of it. But then I felt if Brentford didn't make a meal of it they have got nothing from the referee as that is what it seemed like a lot of the time.
Referee never really, for me, got in control and that is why that flashpoint occurred and he had to card to try restore order.
There was another free kick not given as Canos had a shot. Again one on Maupay, but could be seen as a bit soft but I feel the one seconds later for Middlesbrough (can't remember on who) should have been given. I felt it was certainly careless the way the Brentford player "won" the ball back.
