Penalty given by referee and then changed mind after a VAR review.

Thought it was a soft pen, but not convinced it was C&O to intervene from the clip I’ve seen

I thought this was a pen - a soft one but a pen. I don’t see Anderson initiating the contact, I think Mitoma’s elbow has swept Anderson’s right foot with it as he’s slid across the floor. Surprised to see it overturned.

Yep, thought it was a pen. Don't think it was especially soft. Mitomas arm takes Andersons foot

I don't think it was a penalty, there is no way that amount of contact with the hand is taking down a professional footballer.

As for VAR involvement, I guess it depend what was said. I suspect that Peter Bankes thought Mitoma had made contact on Anderson with his foot, whereas the foot completely missed and only the hand made contact. On that basis it would be a clear and obvious error so I can see why it was reviewed.

Anderson was clearly looking for contact, Mitoma missed him, so he initiated contact. Absolutely no way is that where he would have normally placed his foot. There is one camera angle that demonstrates that perfectly. Great use of VAR.

Interesting one. Maybe Anderson has managed to trick me too, but the reason I think it’s a pen is that it’s hard to simulate the dragging of the leg out to the right in sync with with the hand/arm of Mitoma.

Usually if a player is looking for contact they’ll plant their foot into the defender and then go over, whereas this feels like more of an involuntary sweeping movement that it would be hard to fake.

I'm fully on board with the overturn. Anderson unnaturally adjusts where his foot is landing in order to initiate contact. Great intervention and something that would be very tricky to spot live.
