I’m often inclined to think elbow contact happens a lot in the pro game without any malice and I’m pleased we don’t see reds for it usually. But this doesn’t look great on the angle we are given.

That's not the action of a player "challenging for the ball". For me looks to be clear intent to wipe out his opponent, absolutely no need for his arm to be raised with a pointed elbow in that situation!
