Censorship
17 minutes in and in my opinion the referee has lost control of this game already.
2 players currently off the field of play receiving treatment, both for Madrid, two different challenges that the ref gave neither a free kick. One was a yellow card offence for me.

If he's not careful, he will have a high card count by the end of the game.

The Ref Stop
If the game requires a high card count, it will get a high card count. The players are professional athletes playing an important match, not toddlers thrown into a soft play. They're responsible for their own behaviour.

I really dislike the term "the referee has lost control of the game". I keep coming back to this. There is a culture out there, created by fans and alike, that blames anything and everything on referees. This case is no different. Everyone is responsible for their own actions. Referees are not there to take responsibility for grown adult's actions.

I’m in agreement here. If the referee isn't punishing players with cards for offences that deserve them, then 'they've lost control of the game'. Whereas if they do punish them then 'they are making it about themselves'

No win situation.

I'd waffle a bit here. Ultimately, of course, players are responsible for their actions. But I also do think Rs lose control of games they likely could have controlled (I know I have) by using better judgment and techniques. But I certainly agree there is a very, very, very big gap between a fan view of losing control of the game (which often has a lot to do with what happened to my team) and an analytical review of a game from a refereeing perspective as to decisions (often inaction) that really did factor in a meaningful way to the disintegration of a game.
