Ball hitting the referee

Ball hits the referee in a pass, takes a big deflection and still goes to team mate without any kind of attack present or any pressure on the player with the ball. The referee stops play for a drop ball. Totally unnecessary stoppage. Saw this happing at least once in United v City game and in Liverpool vs Fulham game. Is this an English thing?

It sets expectations for other referees to do it. Over the season I had it a few times when payers stopped and I had to yell out 'keep going'

One in particular from Michael Oliver really annoyed me, hit him and the ball went backwards about 20 yards to Martinez, no promising attack, no change of possession etc etc, and yet the game was still stopped.

As you say, a lot of the players stopped anyway as they are expecting a dropped ball even though not needed. That means when I try and carry on after I get hit (at risk of jinxing it - none this season so far!!) everyone moans!!

That's true, but I wonder if he realised this or someone had a quiet word in his ear because it happened again a little later and he didn't stop play for a dropped ball.

Or did he deliberately let the ball hit him just to pretend he knew the law all along

I think players (especially at lower levels) don’t have a clue what the standard is on the ball hitting the ref. I think many of us predicted when the Law came in that refs were going to over use the DB in the interest of safe refereeing.

Last game had a player in my ear saying I made him change his tracking back run so its a dropped ball.
