Retired big bad baldy in all black!
2 penalties given by Michael Oliver, one upheld after the review, the other overturned as a clear and obvious mistake.

Penny for Michael Oliver's thoughts after going to the screen and reviewing his decision to award Arsenal a penalty. In real time at full speed, can understand why it was given as the defender's hands were clearly up near his face, but replays showed the contact was clearly forehead and Michael Oliver appears to have a good view.

MO possibly may have had to go to the screen due to the way the protocols are written, but agree 100%, all it needed was the VAR to say sorry Michael, you have dropped a clanger, no hands or arm involved, clearly hit him on the forehead, please overturn your decision.

Granted 2 different sports and it's taken some fine tuning over the years, but cricket appears have have got DRS working very well, football could learn thing or 2 in how VAR is run and utilised.

Where have all the blatant holding cards gone?

I can’t remember who but I was, yes, shocked that MO didn’t sanction for the arm around the neck to prevent the breakaway… for it was blatant holding, SPA and reckless, take your pick.

If this is the new foul tolerance for the EPL I would like the EPL to have it’s own law book please!

Best collective Refereeing performance in EPL of the season so far
VAR was used correctly and had a positive impact on the game on this day

I can tell you what Michael Oliver will have thinking, along the lines of 2how have I got that wrong". Can understand how he did with the pace of the shot and the defender's arm up, and that is exactly the level of things Howard Webb wants VAR involved in.

I think for handball they will still refer to the screen, even though it was very obvious it hit him in the face.

I don’t think for HB they have to go to an OFR if the only question is whether there was ball/arm contact as that is an objective call, but do have to go if it is for a judgement on whether it is deliberate biggering. But the R has some discretion to go over, including for selling a call. My guess is that MO went over to better sell the call on the field, or because he was “sure“when he saw it live and really wanted to be sure it wasn’t an erroneous reversal.

Yeah, I was actually thinking about "selling it" when I typed that. Oliver was so confident and sure when he gave the penalty, it might have been nagging in his mind for the rest of the game had he not seen it for himself.

VAR was used well in this game but i'm tired of the game being refereed twice and inconsistently. I don't know the answer though.

It was probably "Thank goodness I have VAR to correct that one."

In some respects, it's comforting to see even one of the best referees on the planet have a clanger like that. Shows he's human like the rest of us. He just has technology to help him correct the error.
