No doubt about Giroud's red card......but....why did Atkinson utterly fail to deal with Ferdinand who grabbed Giroud around the neck, right in front of him?

Should've been another red......

LOTG, Yes, should have walked. might have been difficult to sell a VC for that but yes.

How often is it talked about or referred to as "what do the players want...." throw in, you are unsure, reds retreat, blues pick it up but you think it's a red ball ya de ya.

No one was looking for it, nor asking, and Giroud certainly didnt fall to the floor with the amoun of contact compared to the (IMO) lack of contact that Giroud made. Maybe if he'd flung himself to the floor rio may have walked, but did you lipread what Rio said to him?
 
From what I remember it was lower part of the neck/shoulder, hardly violent conduct. I think the fact that nobody even mentioned shows it was really nothing as Sky's pundits love to highlight these things that refs miss.
 
It was mentioned.....and it was the neck.

Doh, I must have missed that. Even looking at that I don't see it as violent conduct, it's different to grabbing someone round the throat in a choking manner. He grabs him and just shouts something to him.
 
I never mentioned Girouds red, violent conduct doesn't depend on contact alone. The manner in which it is done as I said, this is just him grabbing him from behind so a yellow for adopting an aggressive attitude. He's neither used excessive force or brutality for me.

The Giroud one was obvious as despite how little contact there was he's done a stupid head but motion which will only ever be perceived as brutality. The embaressing thing about it was Onuoha's reaction.
 
What probably saved Rio is the ref is behind them and couldn't see rio's war face and giroud did not react in any way
 
If I was giroud, I'm already getting a red so if someone squeezes me around the back go the neck like that coward Ferdinand, he would have gotten something straight back.

Can't stand Ferdinand, he's been a poor player for club and country for a number of years, when he was in the England squad always looked like he couldn't be assed and was only there for the cash!! (My own opinion obviously)

Ok....how much force is acceptable when grabbing an opponent around the neck then?
 
Think about it like this:

IF a player grabs YOU around the neck like this, does he walk? Of course he bloody does, so he should when he does it to a player as well!
 
Just to add to this slightly, Rio had already been cautioned, so whether you believe it was C1(AA) or VC, he should have been walking!

Look we could go around and around, I've explained my reasons for not believing it's a red and you still think it is and are just trying to pick holes like you always do, same as a notable other on this forum.
 
Plenty of room on the forum for differing opinions fellas. There is no forum rule necessitating us all to agree (other than to agree to disagree on occasion!) :cool:

Some would welcome straight red, some would favour a second caution. But the real question is, do we all agree Rio is an idiot? ;)

You stated that you felt the force used wasn't excessive.....I'm just trying to understand how much force you think is reasonable for grabbing someone around the neck?

Or are you struggling to defend that position so have chosen to try and deflect the awkward questions?
 
Any force around the neck is excessive in my eyes. No need for any force there at all so as such any force is excessive. Its football, not neckball
 
The one thing I would say, it was the back of the neck rather than the front. Around the front of the neck is a strangle. Around the back is more of an annoyance.
