The Ref Stop
In the Australian A-League this sort of thing has happened several times without so much as a free kick!! Was always concerning how many referees didn't get the concept of 'endangering the safety of an opponent'....though I always figured it was a bit of 'agreeing with whatever the superstar referees do in case somebody is watching'
I'm struggling to think of how it could be less than red.
 
On the next picture in the actual album it actually looks like the defender clears it, and then they make contact.

A picture causes a million arguments!
 
Impossible to tell from a photo, we'd have to see the video. While it looks brutal, we don't know the speed or direction of movement for either player. The dark blue player could have brought his leg up to that position in a slow, controlled and safe manner, with no opponent nearby. The light blue player could've charged 50 yards and launched himself into the challenge head first from 5-6 yards away. Of course, it's probably a red, but its impossible to be sure from just a photograph :)
