So a sub can’t be assistant a junior level?

I believe it is U16 isn't allowed. Some leagues might be more specific. Google seems to be backing up my U16 theory.

@Ori I rarely have an issue with CARs. Just don't over think it. You sound turbo against them and that could be a problem in itself.

If they keep in line and they flag. Just relax and go with them. Try not to get too clever. Talk to them, give them thumbs up, crush dissent by being vocal.

I don't know if you work with neutrals a lot, but when you do. Your neutrals get accused of being wrong non-stop. So CARs don't stand a chance.

If they want to change a CAR. Just let it happen. I don't rebrief. If they start doing a poor job on the line. Speak with them.

There is a minimum age of 16 I think from a previous post.

I have rarely had issues with car when it’s an adult. Occasionally have to tell them not to coach, but I have a good routine with them at the start explaining signals and always give them a thumbs up after a call. Have a chat with them at half time and see how they are getting on and a little joke around.

On this occasion the coach was chatting to his assistant on the half way line and flagging for offside in penalty area. That’s not even trying.

If it’s 16 minimum age, then at u18 they can use a sub by law? I always say I prefer if it’s not a sub, but I have had them in the past and generally it’s not great. Does get the other teams back up too.

I fully agree with you saying ideally not a sub. I also don't really have an issue with the manager coaching as the CAR.

End of the day they are helping you out, they definitely do not want to be running the line. As long as it isn't overbearing or they aren't being ludicrous with their shouts and they are trying as an assistant, it is fine to me. Just choose the path of least resistance.

Our league doesn’t allow coaching from the line, but I tend to let most of it go.
I don’t believe you can be focused on the job though if your screaming at your players to push up and pull back and tack and cover when you’re supposed to watching for throw ins, offsides etc…..

I do love having proper officials when we hit finals. It’s so much nicer having a neutral.
Unfortunately due to the lack of qualified refs and the added cost to youth football, it just can’t happen.

18s they can if there 18 otherwise no although not sure what the situation is if there qualified themselves and 16

CARs mostly fine down here. I just let em know I’m a big boy and I can make my own decisions based on their opinion. Rather have a dude there than not.

Likewise. OA Dog & Duck league, with dubs running the line, not so much but youth football with often eager (football boots!) parents, and with a good briefing I find that, more often than not they do a reasonable job.

I guess it’s what you’re used to, and practice makes perfect, but in the couple of games where I’ve had to do offsides from the middle I’ve found it a challenge to be positioned to get a decent view of offsides and be well placed for everything else.

In the OPs scenario, with no parent and just one coach I’d have taken responsibility for offsides and allowed a sub to do ins and outs.

So today I took all your advice and put it into play.

No dad available and subs were going to be used as a CAR.
first half the kid was excellent. I felt all his calls were great and I gave him the full respect and thumbs up and all that jazz.

2nd half, they replaced him as he wanted to go on the pitch. This guy was flagging for fouls and I told him not to. He was shouting push up and man on and again I asked him not to, and he said I don’t want to do this and I was forced to. So I asked for a different sub who was again very good.

Rest of the match ended in chaos and not due to the CAR. Separate post on that.
