2016 UCL Final – Refereeing Incidents Review (Real Madrid vs Atlético Madrid)

Hello everyone,

I’m reviewing the 2016 UEFA Champions League Final between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid, refereed by Mark Clattenburg.

I’m interested in analysing the significant refereeing incidents from the match from a referee’s perspective.

This is purely a refereeing/Laws of the Game discussion. I’m not interested in debating which team deserved to win or whether either team was favoured.

I plan to post the incidents individually, with the approximate minute and a clip/image where possible, so that each situation can be discussed separately.

For each incident, I’d particularly appreciate your views on:

  1. What is the correct decision?
  2. Foul or no foul?
  3. If misconduct is involved: no card, yellow card or red card?
  4. Which Law of the Game and refereeing considerations apply?
  5. Was the decision made by the referee/assistant correct?
  6. If relevant, would VAR intervene if the same incident happened today?

Also, if I miss any significant refereeing incidents from the match, please let me know the approximate minute so I can add it.

I’m hoping to understand the reasoning behind the decisions rather than simply whether a decision benefited one team or the other.

Thank you!
