    Euros 2024

Genuine question from an American-in Europe, how “conservative” are you in terms of stopping games because of lightning like what happened in Dortmund? (Conservative=being very safe). I’ll say that in the US, we are generally very conservative in this approach. If we see any lightning or hear...

    Tossing of the Coin

Generally speaking, I follow this procedure for tossing the coin. Ask the captains if there are any questions Show both sides of the coin (I try to have a coin with two colors so I can say "red" and "gold" or "black" and "gray" instead of heads or tails) Unless it's really windy (which happens...

You must have HATED it when we shipped Piers Morgan back to you then!! :D:p

    Bel v Svk

Christina Unkel. She’s a former US FIFA referee, and she still works college games in the US. She’s married to a current MLS and former FIFA referee. They met for the first time working a match together. She’s an excellent communicator. Her day job is a trial attorney, so she comes by her...

    Serbia v England

I've also seen at least two other referees point to the ground like this more than a few times in their games. I'm hoping this isn't the case, but I wonder if this is something UEFA is teaching. And if it is, I'm not a fan.

    Spain/Croatia (Oliver)

Whether it's right or wrong, the general practice that unless it's 100% absolutely not a challenge/attempt to play the ball, the referees are going to issue a caution. I also agree that UEFA will support a caution in this case.

    GER v SCO - Euro 24

I dont disagree with @RustyRef that Turpin isn't going to get a great score. I get he's an international-level official and the expectations are really high at that level. I've already discussed the reasons why I believe he missed the red card/PK. The penalty area line decision is harder. First...

    GER v SCO - Euro 24

I mentioned on a US-based forum that one of my favorite things to watch in officiating is Clement Turpin give his "I am not amused by your feeble attempts to embellish" expressions (example below, but I prefer his "smirk"). I remember his first Euros in 2016 when he looked like a deer in...

    GER v SCO - Euro 24

I've seen several articles saying UEFA would emphasize this for the event. So far in this game, we've seen several instances of Turpin only dealing with Robertson. The conversations have seemed to be pretty civil so far. I'm still skeptical whether this will be consistently and continuously...

    GER v SCO - Euro 24

While I agree that is one I'm sure Turpin would like to have back, in my mind that's the type of play that VAR was meant to help get right. There's a lot going on in a condensed area. Potential shot on goal, plenty of Scotland players around (possible DOGSO-H), etc. It's absolutely a red card...

    New 2026 Kit

I’d imagine that the PGMOL kit will be a new and unique design. When MLS referees switched from Adidas to Capelli a few years ago, Capelli designed a completely new kit with different colors from what was sold to the mass market. I would highly doubt that Puma is working with a PGMOL focus group...

    New 2026 Kit

As I'm reading this, it appears that only the PGMOL kits will require to change. But I have a couple of questions. 1. Is it confirmed that Nike will no longer supply PGMOL referee kits, or is it just that the current Nike contract expires and Nike could sign a new contract? 2. If Nike is not...

    Recommended Smart Watches

More for general purposes, here is the list of all of the Garmin watches that use RefSix. https://apps.garmin.com/apps/741674b3-33c4-46fd-bc07-0d4dbdd02174?tid=1 There are a lot of HIIT/interval timing apps on Apple Watch, or you can set up intervals in the native Apple exercise apps as shown...

    FA Cup Final

I read somewhere else that MU’s red and black are hard to discern for color-blind people. I do not know if that’s true or the reason for the officials wearing yellow-just something I heard.

    FA Cup Final

Off topic, but it’s looking like another Dutch manager with a two-part last name is going to end his Manchester United management career by lifting the FA Cup…..

    VAR challenge system

Had something like that happen to me in a game many years ago. A local photographer had a bad angle on an offside/onside play that he thought I had wrong. He came up to me at halftime and said he'd show me the "evidence". I responded that if he continued this threat, I'd have the athletic...

    Core fitness test

The more succinct way to put this is that the test is pass/fail. You don’t get an A for completing the test in, say, 13/18. You just have to hit the minimum standard for the 40 intervals. It’s easy to burn out if you have to wait at a cone, because going from a stop to motion expends more energy...

    Barca V PSG

It's an American saying essentially "go do something more useful". I'm trying to think of an English/British equivalent but am coming up empty.

    Barca V PSG

Which stinks. Basically, if you're brave and willing to make a big call you won't referee a team. I wish assignors would basically tell teams to pound sand when something like this happens. The only thing that happens is referees have an incentive to not make a big call against a team.

    Reffing your old team

Back in the post-Covid days, my son’s team was playing teams from the neighboring state (who had stricter rules on sports being played than our state) in friendlies. I volunteered to referee these games just so they had the feel of a game instead of a scrimmage. In one of these games, I...
