    Bra Jap

Nothing much to see here… though I was puzzled by the Casemiro sub. Seconds into added time, Casemiro stays down, Japan have the ball, ref stops the match, ref asks Casemiro to leave the FoP, Casemiro can be seen saying ”no, I’ll stay on the field”, medical team comes on… then sub board goes...

    Belgium - Iran

Soft contact but smart from the attacker and ref has no choice - at this level. At 0-0 in grassroots you might make a different decision.

I was again impressed by the referee not stopping play for feigning injuries. Risky but successful here.

    All this counting

No. You misunderstand. Deliberately I think. And I disagree. It fundamentally affects the referee. I just watched a Uefa referee in a tight match. It was impossible to be in position before every count. But I also think he interpreted the count quite ”actively”. I know from futsal that the same...

I was shocked/surprised by how much faster… I expect some different pacing from country to country and league to league.

As said, new laws as in WC being applied at top level here, including counting throw ins and goalkicks. Appreciate the conversation by the way 🫣

    All this counting

Yeah but … football… the winning team 1-0 up wants to slow everything down after going ahead after 50 mins… so the onus is on the referee to properly count every restart as they want to waste time at every restart. What I saw… yes, the wait before the count starts… but it all means the referee...

    All this counting

…you have only been counting goalkeeper kicks from hands, right? What I found interesting watching the other day was that the referee had to count goalkicks while moving on many occasions. This meant a lot of running backwards while counting in order to watch and communicate with the...

Full disclosure, I do a lot of futsal so I am very familiar with a lot of counting. What do you think about the counting in the world cup and implementing it? (Last night I attended a local top flight match - Finland - and the Finn top league has adopted the new counting laws as of last week...

Is that 38-0.app or another game? (At least in 38-0 the 343 and 352 force full backs into the wide mids :( )

    Qatar v Switzerland

Wrong hand drives me nuts. It might seem trivial but it’s so distracting. If I see a flag in the wrong hand I think the AR is about to signal. For me it’s someone trying to look cool when they could just do the job! Some really good discussions with 15,16,17 year old officials recently about this.

You snake! I haven’t managed unbeaten. One defeat 4 times, all with Schmeichel in goal. I did manage 106 points. Best average rating 91 a couple of times. I mostly went with 93-99 era, I don’t have the evidence but it seemed like less dross and higher % of 90+. What was the key to going unbeaten?

    The 2026 World Cup thread

“Makkelie was ordered to the monitor by video assistant referee Carlos del Cerro Grande to review the play. Makkelie eventually overturned the yellow on Ream, instead booking Almirón for simulation, justifying the “mistaken identity” definition.” Hmm… how is Collina gonna take that? Sounds...

how to get better at spotting fouls quickly?

As above, don’t watch the ball in the air. Also don’t watch the ball at corners. With high balls, use the time to move and get side on to midfield headed challenges. With long balls, RUN - and run hard and early - and sacrifice some distance for an angle. With corners, don’t get rooted to...

Player calls an Irish opponent 'Paddy'

Match context and local cultural context matter a lot with this.

    Interfering with play?

I want an offside flag here. If the GK appeals it’s a very easy flag. But I think this is interfering with an opponent enough (if no touch) for the flag. Great clip.

    Goalkeeper Control 2025/26

Ah!!!! Now I get it!. I think it is a big change - “touching it with any part of the arms or hands” gave us some scope with aerial barges as the GK tried to palm, or sliding tackles as the GK tries to palm. I think it’s a big change to benefit attackers. Surprised it was not mentioned.
