I got a Garmin VivoActive 4S recently, looking forward to giving RefSix a go.

Does anybody else love the (sometimes) thrill?

I only referee youth football at the moment... all cards go in. Partly because that's what I've been told "should" happen and also because the league say we should and fundamentally we get paid to do a job.

    Parent Asst Referee Behavior

In the U14 league where I am we submit match reports directly to the league (generally scores, were you given a team sheet, any issues), and can log 'respect' issues through the same process. If the same process exists where you are I'd be reporting it through the 'respect' process and letting...

    Pitches in pitches

I remembered this scenario that happened to me a few months back, intrigued to know what you'd do/advise doing. The match had refereeing mentors on site, so I'll share what they said later on. U15 Academy match, essentially it's a friendly. Red go break into the box, blue defender fouls...

    Junior/Youth Foul language U15

For me, definitely. Offinabus. To add... we talk a lot about educating at youth football. This isn't one of those scenarios for me, the player will know its not okay. Say it to a member of staff in school and you're in serious bother.

Notts FA has a new RDO... he emailed out introducing himself this morning. I'll send you his email.

All down to personal fitness really. The first time I did the 3 in a day I definitely wasn't as mentally sharp in the last match! Now I wouldn't think twice about doing it.

Advice on handling interactions with players

You can also play some quiet powerful "mind games" with this just by rarely using the please... stolen straight from the classroom. Things like "from there, thank you" or "further back #5, thank you". It's still a very clear instruction but sounds very different to just "back #5". But players...

Actual law changes or 'last weeks ref' law changes? 😉

    First game

My experience of youth football is this is not unusual. I'll often do 1 x 7v7 followed by an 11v11 (u14) a bit of a break and a 9v9 early afternoon. Where I am the leagues have a couple of different ways of allocation. One of them you indicate how many matches you'd be available to do on the...

Junior/Youth Foul throws in youth football

A youth league I ref in has re-takes permitted until U11. This is the same point that they go to 9v9, retreat on goalkicks stops and offside/indirect FKs are introduced.

    One bit of advice

I'd also add try and avoid this kind of exchange putting you off in a match... It'll happen. I had a similar one recently, got a tea from the club house after the match and the away coach came over to thank me for the game saying he thought I had an excellent game and would happily have me...

    First game

100% with the confidence comments, sell those decisions as though you are certain even if there's doubt in your mind "took a nick off blue, it's a red gk" *run away to set up*. If you're really not sure, give yourself a couple of seconds... if green goes to take the corner and red set up to...

    U13 - Penalty Decision

With this age group I think the stepped approach is especially important, although I do find it can become a little hazy. What would be a public verbal warning at OA might actually be you taking a few seconds to educate the player. Excuse my ignorance, are you saying you wouldn't award a...

At what age group should you introduce cards

I think I actually said: "anymore and there's a card in my pocket if I need it". I guess the last bit changes the message a fair bit! (Proof read your posts kids). Point taken!

    U13 - Penalty Decision

I've only skimmed above... apologies if repeating. Obviously I wasn't there, but can understand a PK being given for all the usual reasons (different angle etc). Perhaps the ref had warned the defender/teams multiple times... continued to do it, it might be soft but they've been warned?

At what age group should you introduce cards

Two scenarios from today... 1) My game U14s... started getting a bit more physical early second half. Red player loses the ball near his defensive corner flag, gives the blue player a bit of a "shoulder/shove". Easy FK. Call player over, 'there was no foul from blue on you'... 'I know'. 'You've...

At what age group should you introduce cards

I think At U13/U14 it might vary (for me) with what's said, who hears etc etc. However, at U14 (year 9 in UK schools) players know what's okay and what is not... especially when it comes to abusive language. Granted there may be some grey arrears but clear cut abusive language should be...

At what age group should you introduce cards

I do a lot of youth football, largely because I find it far nicer environment to be part of in the early stages of my refereeing career... and I'm approaching 30! As mentioned multiple times above, the player coming on poses no risk to the match control. A quick word with the coach and job...
