    Footwear

Flat soled shoes are a nightmare for the life span of 3G pitches, essentially crushes the crumb into a solid mass rather than the light fluffy surface it should be. If you're on 3G, molded studs all the way and you'll be fine.

    OFFINABUS or not?

In 2022 no school child of secondary school age is using puff to mean "soft" without an awareness of the homophobic connotations. If they said in earshot of a teacher at school, they'd be in serious bother. Same thing on a football pitch.

    Pre match instructions

    1. I confirm attendance and a rough time you'll be there. If it's a cup game I tend to confirm any specific rules e.g subs. 2. Hello, introduce with name, small talk - nice pitch, long journey, how's the season etc. Confirm team sheet time and CAR if applicable. 3. Hi, I'm xyz, introduce...

    Local derby

When trying to let them play doesn't work, start turning the screw... doesn't mean cards are necessarily coming out for fouls but they'll realise you're giving the fouls and adjust accordingly... and if not they get to play in a really dull game of football!

    'MINE , LEAVE IT '

I had a CAR who claimed to know it all, avoided listening to a word i said and then proceeded to try and run line for the entire length of the sideline... I considered leaving him to do full length sprints 🤣

Half length - do your homework!

Depending on your collection of local leagues and choices it gets all kinds of confusing. Especially across boys and girls youth football. Who goes 7v7 to 9v9 to 11v11 at what age, at which age the ball size changes and then you chuck in half lengths. Keeps us on our toes!

MCI CRY what was the offence?

I think the goal being disallowed is safe refereeing, and judging by the reactions of the players it was what the game expected as well. Fairplay to the Palace player for chancing it, a couple of steps further out and it probably goes the other way. Do we really want it going to VAR to rock 3...

    Junior Premier League - Warriors

Evening, I've been asked to referee a couple of girls JPL (warriors) fixtures I'm September. Anyone know what the league fee is for U16 (11v11)? The coach seems somewhat unsure but is offering less than the local leagues. Cheers Dan

    Refs course help

Take a pen and paper, be prepared to get involved and say what you think - embrace being wrong. The whole idea of the classroom parts is dispelling misconceptions that people come in with from either player mindsets or watching Sky Sports (other broadcasters available and commentators as equally...

    Signalling for a goal

Hockey umpires tend to be much closer to the goal line if not behind it when play is in the equivalent area of penalty area. Therefore the signal works because the field of play is still in full view.

    WHU vs NFO

Haven't seen the incident but listened on 5 live... commentator was red, co-comms was probably red but could understand yellow and accept. Ultimately sounds like one of those where either card is accepted but without the time consumption... on a grassroots field, entirely different ballgame.

    NAR flag recommendations.

Spending my Sundays on women's football in the coming season, on promotion on the women's pathway and will be spending a fair amount of matches in teams of 3 with NARs. Currently have the cheap and cheerful flags for CARs but want something nicer for those who should look after them... not...

    Heading ban for u12s (England)

Nottinghamshire: u10s and below is mini-soccer, retreat on GKs and all fks direct. U11s upwards full LOTG in 9v9 or 11v11

    Socks...

Yes, the posts have reached this level. Having gone through multiple pairs of the Nike matchfit socks (the heel gives way when putting them on) any recommendations for more durable socks? I've got a few months out of multiple pairs doing a couple of games a week... maybe I'm an oaf but it'd be...

    Heading ban for u12s (England)

I coach a girls side who are starting U11s this season (22/23) at 9v9 with offside etc, they play in the U11s boys league and there is very little heading in the game bar a couple of stand out players. In the 9v9 games I've covered, very little heading of the ball. Last season I saw 1 "diving"...

    Promotion window 2022/23

Notts FA are hosting a day to explain changes to promotion in mid-July, the email reads like applying for promotion won't open until after that...

    Northampton vs Mansfield

The pundits/commentary team stunk of purely arguing against the decision for a story. I'm 99% certain that if it had been given offside, they'd have clipped it up and said "we all know that being in an offside position is not an offence in itself. He doesn't play the ball, his teammate does...

    Switching it up

And of course remember that if you do start 'tinkering' with your own system... take care when going to flash a card! 🟥🟨😳

    Leeds vs Chelsea

Commentators did their usual best to shed doubt on the decision despite it being an excellent piece of refereeing by Taylor. Couldn't have been in a better position if he tried and there was an obvious pause/thinking time before reaching for the red.

    'Afters' after advantage

I think @Anubis has hit the nail on the head with this previously with the horse analogy on other posts... I'll let others go hunting if they want to quote it!
