You just know the crowds in the professional game will be doing the countdown from the stands and demanding a corner as soon as the 8 seconds are up. By the way (unless i've missed this) but how do you know which side they should take the corner from ?

It's the same with a lot of these new laws / campaigns. It'll be hot topic to start with, and the occasional corner kick will be given on TV for all to see, but after a while it'll fizzle out just like the 6 secs rule, crowding refs etc. The countdown from 5 secs seems to me to be for TV...

I think there is a clear benefit to the player though, that's why they've decided to take it from there. They're throwing it straight to their keeper who has very little opposition, as opposed to the halfway line where players are marked up

You can't base decisions on how much teams are moaning. Once teams recognise this, they'll be moaning about everything

TBH we had a ref sec a few years ago, that did just that. He allocated the refs to the best behaved teams first (from the marks given by the opposition) and let the clubs with the worst reputation do it themselves

I didn't think a player could play with any type of jewellery. I check them before KO and refuse let them play unless it's removed (they soon remove it lol). Isn't it done with fact based decisions in other sports, though ? ie IN/OUT in tennis, hitting the stumps in cricket. Yes, the handball would have been fact based, but the penalty is still subjective. Also, how would city have known it was outside the area ? Would they have their own cameras...

Don't like the idea of a challenge based system. Once you encourage the idea that referee decisions can be challenged, I think you're treaded dangerous ground and it would be a nightmare at grassroots.

I totally understand that, but this is a shocking decision. Maybe a game of this magnitude should have cameras looking at all areas of the match. The BBC showed the correct angle within seconds

I think you're missing my point. The whole system is flawed (ie what VAR can and can't give etc). At the end of the day VAR has spotted that the keeper handled outside the area and not even handball was given, let alone DOGSO. When the ref sees that incident on TV I think he'll feel let down by...

All the talk about what VAR can and can't get involved with, but yesterday showed what a farce it's become. Fact is, in front of millions of people, the keeper has handled the ball outside the area, and the current system (albeit the refereeing team, VAR..whatever) has failed to spot it. Plus...
