    Marking Managers, Players and Spectators

My Saturday morning youth league has just introduced a new system through Fulltime whereby referees submit a report on every game rating the quality of the pitch, flag any technical breaches (kit issues, team sheets etc), whether CARs were supplied and rate the behaviour of managers/coaches...

    Overprotecting the goalkeeper

I'm getting slightly tired of your assertion that you have to give decisions that you know are wrong to be an excellent ref. To go back to the original example of the GK/corner, that is an objective decision. It's black and white. We all know that there's an element of managing the occasion at...

    Overprotecting the goalkeeper

I completely disagree with your example in bold. It's a corner and I'd be giving the corner; I as the referee know the defender has touched it, as does the defender, so it's a corner. There's a difference between "safe" refereeing and making a decision that you know is wrong.

    Reds versus Blues

That’s the big question isn’t it (and not one I claim to have the answer to) - how do we make sure refs are better equipped to handle these games? Obviously they need to ref big games to get that experience, but that has to be balanced against the need to ensure the big decisions are right in...

    Reds versus Blues

Reflecting on the game this morning (with the blue tinted specs as off as I can get them), I think there are 3 KMIs yesterday, all of which Paul Tierney got wrong: - First half penalty/DOGSO - it's a clear foul by Milner and whether it's a penalty and a yellow or a FK and DOGSO red, he simply...

    Reds versus Blues

And now fails to give Milner a nailed on second yellow. Tierney out of his depth.

    Reds versus Blues

It’s so, so frustrating. Once again he’s been punished for being honest and trying to stay on his feet. On a related note, given VAR have checked the pen (and presumably decided it was outside, because it was clearly a foul) why is it not a RC for DOGSO for Milner?

    Strangest thing you've seen

Turned up at my U16 game last weekend to find the nets secured with.... ...a chest of drawers (seriously, a drawer on each side with the main shell in the middle). Thankfully I carry spare tent pegs with me, but the manager was genuinely surprised when I explained that it wasn't suitable :oops...

    Youth football DOGSO

"Don't spout the LOTG at me" :hmmm: I'm all for leniency at the younger age groups and have probably issued <10 cards in 10+ years to players under 12, but to suggest that the LOTG don't apply is, quite frankly, ridiculous. Of course education has its place (foul throws, moving ball at GKs...

    LUFC V LFC

Obviously it’s a horrific injury, but (and I say this without having been able to see a replay) I don’t actually think it was a RC challenge. Happy to correct myself when I can see a reply, but I suspect Pawson has refereed the outcome rather than the challenge itself.

    West Ham v Leicester

Very good use of VAR. Awful challenge by Perez on Fornals that MO somehow missed in real time (maybe wrong side?), but asked to review by Darren England and correctly gave the red. On a slight sidetone, it's good to see them showing replays on the big screens in stadiums after the decision has...

4 player fight not reported and they were replaced!

Like this approach. With just reporting you run the risk that the referee (although very unlikely) actually did report the reds, which would make you look slightly foolish.

    Multiple 11 asides

It's not uncommon to referee multiple games back to back in England either (in fact I'd say most of us do this most weekends), but as you say it's far from optimal, particularly if your third game is being assessed. Having the physical fitness to do 3 games in a row is one thing, but refereeing...

4 player fight not reported and they were replaced!

Great to hear last week's ref is ready to go for the new season!

    Abandoned Game

Glad you're okay @refeire and totally support the abandonment here. There's some great advice above so I won't go back over old ground, but I will say that it's important to reflect on the game as you are doing and ask yourself "is there anything I could have done differently?" (in this case...

    Was refereeing kids football

That's up there with "you're listening to the shouts ref" for me; players quite literally appeal for everything, so even the most vociferous ones are gonna be right sometimes!

    Spurs v MCFC

I'm very much in favour of this new, more lenient approach provided that it is applied consistently (which so far it has been). Totally agree on the Tanganga point though. It was very clear that he was being given a final warning on that third challenge and Taylor made himself look foolish by...

First Open Age Game this weekend - what's your #1 piece of advice?

This. 100% this. Call it as you see it and treat it like you would a competitive game. Fell into that trap post lockdown last summer. First open age game for 4 years and first of any kind for 6 months; let too much go and totally lost control of the game.
