    PSV v LIV

We talk about high and low thresholds all the time. If you're going to have an almost unrealistically high threshold for a physical offence card in minute ~70 and the game continues to trundle along at roughly the same "temperature", suddenly adjusting your threshold significantly down for a...

    Misapplication of Law

I never said it should specifically be for return subs? I said it would help with games that have return subs to reduce the need for the referee to take a complicated record and remove the possibility of getting it "wrong" at the end. And that this issue is worse at lower levels where return...

    PSV v LIV

Do I think it was a covering defender? Probably not. But in a game where you're already not taking it seriously (as described in the top post of this thread) by making laws up to allow treatment but not show an obvious yellow card, there was enough of a covering defender that it didn't need to...

    PSV v LIV

Had a real dead rubber air, with the ref not wanting to get his cards out unnecessarily, although I don't really see what was optional about a yellow for that one. At least it did until he chose not to take a definitely available "covering defender" excuse not to send a Liv defender off for...

    Misapplication of Law

Baffling to me how many referees love arguing in favour of not making their own lives easier!

    Misapplication of Law

If it ain't broke, why does this thread exist?

    Misapplication of Law

Your final objection is entirely based on the idea that this new law would be applied inconsistently. So the way to stop that problem is....don't apply the new law inconsistently? Grassroots - aka, where the referees are often on their own, are least likely to have NARs to help manage/track...

    Misapplication of Law

I am proposing that we stop caring about who was on the pitch at the end of the game. Pick any 11 of your (up to) 16 listed players to take a PK. Write their number down when they walk up. Job done.

    Misapplication of Law

I don't agree at all. If any 11 players can take a kick, it is considerably less likely that the "wrong" player will take a kick. That seems self-evident to me? I think repeat subs make this issue far more likely, yes. Again, I'm struggling to articulate why, because....obviously more players...

    Misapplication of Law

The problem that this thread literally was started because of? Under current laws, it is possible to allow the "wrong" player to take a penalty, which potentially triggers an investigation, replays and suspensions for the referee. And repeat subs a) make it easier for the referee to mess up...

    Misapplication of Law

I love the instinct on this forum to immediately point out problems with an idea while somehow managing to avoid putting a second of critical thinking into possible answers! Is it strange that I read the post you replied to and my brain immediately started solving the problems you highlight? I...

    David coote

I don't think there's any reason to actually doubt what he said in the original videos. He doesn't like Liverpool, he doesn't like their former manager - being caught saying that doesn't mean those aren't his true opinions. So why would he suddenly start being sympathetic to their feelings now?

    Appeals

No. Referees are already wrongly accused of having too much ego - removing the one obvious source of "accountability" won't help that perception at all.

    Wolves vs Arsenal

Exactly. The only reason they haven't repealed the red card is because it's not within their power to do so.
  15. GraemeS

    Wolves vs Arsenal

I mean, I'm in my mid-30's, have been watching football since I was 10 and I don't remember those days. I'm fairly convinced they're imaginary.

    Liverpool vs Ipswich

Speaking of high challenges in a Liverpool game....
  17. GraemeS

    Wolves vs Arsenal

I'd love for the football media to start talking about "best/acceptable/wrong" decisions rather than framing everything as a simple right/wrong binary.

    Fouled Off The Pitch

Exactly this. My local league team sheets have a field for "physio" and I am expected to not start play if that field hasn't been completed. Do I have any way of knowing if that named person is remotely qualified? No. Am I even really expected to check if the named person is actually...

    Wolves vs Arsenal

And who famously, are not necessarily qualified referees and as far as we know, have no requirement to pass a LOTG test or display any knowledge of the law before taking on that role. Being an ex-player is considered qualification enough

    Wolves vs Arsenal

Referees have the right to appeal a report written by a referee and have another referee decide. Seems pretty logical to me. But for some reason, that's not what happens with PL appeals panels - hence why I think you may as well toss a coin and see what that "decides".
