Junior/Youth first time reffing junior football

Do t worry about the sidelines, you’re there to referee the children, not the adults. A good junior grass roots game can do wonders for you reminding you where it all begins. You may find yourself offering pointers to the players and they will listen and take it on board. I would make it clear...

    Elche v Real Madrid

I feel sorry for the referee and blame the players. They cheat at every opportunity, the referee has to make a split second decision. Was the booking for the challenge though or the dissent after?

    Positive!

If you are asking for advice, if you have CAR again, instruct them beforehand what their role is, just ins and outs. The instance where you were told of a foul you missed to the away team, the game was already stopped as you were booking someone. You could’ve simply said. Thankyou for letting me...

    Worst game so far!

Worst game so far, sounds like you may be expecting even worse game in the future? Was a tough game, you struggled and know you did. But you've been able to reflect and seek support and advice on how to manage such a game in future. I would say it's the best game so far because you will learn...

    Standing on the ball

Would you book a coach for shouting 'stand on it' or persistently shouting 'stand on it' after you have given a clear instruction not to?

    Grassroots Interview

His style of refereeing tars us all with the same brush unfortunately

    Maccabi Haifa corner/time wasting

In fact the only thing that gets on my nerves more (apart from players ‘standing on it’ at a free kick) is when people clap, but clap with rigid straight fingers and hands like the falsest crapiest clap ever.

    Maccabi Haifa corner/time wasting

A pet hate of mine is players not taking throw ins at the right place. I do a lot of communication early on about where they should be taken and it usually helps for the rest of the game.

    Knee pain relief

I used to have a lot of knee pain after games, solved it by putting Ironman gel inserts from decathlon into my boots. Not had a problem since

    Best Performance of 2021

You’re all wrong. It was an open age game in November, AFC Millbrow vs Runcorn Town. Ended up 0 0, every decision spot on, just felt good, was on 3G pitch so covered 2 marathons and I know it was best performance of the season because the players from both teams told me so! The rest of the...

    Was I right?

Hi Dylan, if you haven’t done so already, I’d strongly recommend you join your local referee group. If you can’t find one, it might be useful to put your area on here, I’m sure someone will point you in the right direction. A good group will have regular meetings and will offer advice and training

Recording game for the ahem... older ref

Police style notebook for me. My hearing is going too so I struggle to decipher player names at times. When it’s open age, I spend 5 mins writing down squad names and numbers in my notepad, solves everything for me, including the odd player that wasn’t on the pre match sheet. If my eyesight...

    DOGSO-R or advantage and goal?

I get it, just saying I can’t see contact I’m the replay. But granted don’t get a replay in a match, not at my level anyway (apart from pissed up Pete showing me my errors in the car park)

    DOGSO-R or advantage and goal?

I know the keeper and players accepted it, just couldn’t see contact

    DOGSO-R or advantage and goal?

What a ball from midfield though! On the replay, did the keeper actually touch the attacker? Did the attacker have an awful touch and ran across the defender? On the replay I'd be inclined to say no foul, play on

    Wonder why I bother sometimes!

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. We do see on here quite a lot, different referees reflecting about games stating, maybe I should've given a yellow earlier or maybe I should've warned the manager earlier. All of us should use other referees reviews on here as learning points for our games too...

    Missed handball for penalty (probably)

Ask any club assistant ref to look for in and outs only. For penalty claims, you need to be 100%, it’s okay to tell people that you didn’t see it and can’t award it. Honesty is best here imo

Does anybody else love the (sometimes) thrill?

This has to be wind up. I simply tell them to stop fu**ing about and play football and didn't put the cards in?

    Goal kick

Don’t the opposition have to retreat to half way for a goal kick? I’d say it’s more of an opportunity to coach player positioning and learning to pass from the back. Players to recognise what diamonds are and work in threes passing and moving, probably better way of developing players rather...
