    Severe calf cramps

I had the same a season or 2 ago, apparently very common with men of a certain age that don’t exercise a lot. I found it quite insulting to be honest 😁. Only thing to help was rest, think I had 3 months off games to recover

    Managing “friendly” teams

On the other hand, I’ve had an instances with players that I know will lose their cool and recognise when it’s about to happen. On more than 1 occasion, by using their name to say ‘becareful John’ or ‘John, don’t do it’ or ‘John don’t react’ etc has avoided a booking or sending off and potential...

    First 11v11 game

Think I mentioned this on another thread, it’s a game of 3 halves, first, second and last 5 minutes. Really important to tune into the last 5 mins so that the decisions are correct and credible. All the players will remember sadly is the final whistle in this instance

    Can’t please everyone!

Yellow card for dissent, £10 fine, go home and forget it

Goalkeeper Handball just outside of area

Under law, there are 2 DOGSO offences, the one you would use is DOGSO by a handball offence, as the keeper did this outside the area, he’s treated the same as every other player. If you were of the opinion that if he hadn’t hand balled it, the striker had an obvious goal scoring opportunity...

    First 11v11 game

It’s a tough one to take for the losing team, from the other team if the allowed it and on you either way. No matter what you said, no one would listen, you can of course call time as the ball is in the air on the way into the goal if time was up (not recommended by the way)

    Hands in the back ref!

I tend tend to make an announcement after 10 mins in some games, ‘I think we’ve established that everyone has a back, now please stop shouting in the back every time there’s any contact, if there’s a foul, I will award a free kick’ For me that works, most games are fine, but the odd one there...

    OFFINABUS?

I tend to disagree with others here, if it warrants a yellow or red at that age, you should show the card. The players (and parents/coaches) need to learn before they get to 14/15 and are a nightmare to manage. Remember the fine goes to the club, they can of course decide to pay the fine if they...

Commenting on great moments as they happen

I do it quite a lot but then again I talk all the way through the game including OA, if people heard me they’d probably think I need locking up! Red ball, red, came off blue, 8 is offside, becareful here don’t dive in, great tackle, good pass, corner I mean goal kick, I know I said corner but I...

    Manager v parent

I would advise that your son gets access to and reads the league rules relating to conduct on the sidelines. Most junior leagues that I know stipulate the responsibilities of the team manager in relation to managing the sidelines (parents), it's useful having that knowledge when talking to...

    Liverpool Vs Arsenal

It's impossible for anyone to make a judgement on this just by video evidence, I'm sure we would all like to think that there was no intent to strike the player but I'm also sure that we can all fully sympathise with the AR. It is simply unacceptable for any player to approach the match official...

    Things on my mind

It can’t be the worst referee performance he’s ever seen as I’m sure Ive had the same comments made to me after my game. I’m the worst referee and so is my wife

    Second vs First half refereeing

Just to add to this, I was given some great advice by an experienced and well respected ref. IT's a game of 3 halves. 1st half, 2nd half and the final 5 minutes. The final 5 minutes being key when it's a close match or a cup match

Liga MX - Referee (apparently) knees player in groin

Not condoning it, but the player is practically nose to nose to him, just unacceptable from the player too

    Relaxing After a Sunday

You could walk away from doing Sunday games as others have suggested but you've asked how to discharge stress after the game. I'll try not to get too deep here. To me, stress from officiating at any game is self-generated. Unless of course you are threatened or assaulted. You either allow the...

    The struggles of L7 refereeing

Maybe a change could start at a grassroots level? Hear a lot from referees talking about how the professional game needs to change first. The fact that the professional game is professional means that will never change. What if....................a grassroots league makes a stance that...

    Surprising game

Just one final thing to add Dylan, don't blame yourself in any way for this happening. Should you have abandoned the match? The fact that it continued to the end without further incident indicates that you shouldn't have and therefore made the right call. The worry after a mass con where...

    Fines for u/18 u/16 games

This is a little unfair, you cannot throw a comment out 'depends what type of person you want to be really'. A youth player commits an act of violent conduct against another youth player, irrelevant of what his personal circumstances are, as a ref you have to send him off. The skill is being...

    Fines for u/18 u/16 games

A previous junior club that I coached at decided to underwrite all yellow card fines for all teams for this very reason. You'll find plenty of things that could affect you at grassroots junior level. Kids that wear different coloured socks to the rest of the team or boots with holes in, kids...
