    Demotion

As far as I am aware, you have to spend a full season at 5 before you could reapply for promotion again. Say you are informed in May 2017 that you are no longer a level 4. You could apply for promotion for the March 2018/19 season, then again be a level 4 for the 2019/20 season.

Mark Clattenburg - Arsenal vs Hull

On Twitter not too long ago, a referee shared a screenshot of a text from a PGMOL referee who stated that if a goal is scored through the use of a hand, either to assist the goal, or to actually score the goal (as Sanchez did) - the goal should be disallowed. I think based on this, this goal...

    Barcelona appeal a yellow card!

Oops, didn't read the whole of the article - sorry! I'd highly doubt the appeal will be upheld. Unfortunately I'm not sure whether Spanish rules allow them to appeal yellow cards.

    Barcelona appeal a yellow card!

I think the news article have mis-reported what happened. There's another thread on here which shows a video of the referee showing Suarez a straight red card, which could be appealed.

    Replacement armstrap for Touchline Powerflags

Personally, I useTubigrip to hold the receiver unit in place. Find it more comfortable and secure than the arm strap provided - it is also cheaper when it breaks or gets worn out!

    Referee wallet

I used to use these. I didn't have a problem differentiating the match card to the yellow card when it was in my pocket - the match card was quite a bit smaller than my yellow card. I have since changed to writing into a book, just because the cards were simply too small to write the names down...

    Assistant refereeing

Generally the referee should make contact with you before the game, say on the Wednesday for a Saturday game. If this doesn't happen, I'm sure they won't mind if you drop them a line and ask what time they would like you there. What level will you be assisting at?

    Assistant refereeing

Bring anything that you would usually take to a game - cards, whistle, notepad, etc. Anything could happen on the day and one of your colleagues may forget something! Also take a set of flags, the referee should bring a set, but once again, just incase. Enjoy the experience and watch what the...

Yellow or get away with it?

I'd have to disgaree with @Jacob Walukiewicz. If you would've given a penalty and a red card for DOGSO if the handball was successful, you should've given a yellow.

    ''That's a yellow ref''

One way you could prevent this in the future is by pulling out either your book or a yellow card as you're walking over to check the injured player. Both teams will see that you've already made your mind up and as such won't ask for a yellow. However, this only works if you're certain it's a...

    Leave field or not?

I believe that once you have called the trainer/physio onto the field of play, the player has to leave regardless of whether they receive treatment or not. One reason why you should ask the player if they need/want treatment before beckoning them on.

    Lukaku goal vs Palace

Jon Moss could quite easily have gone for 'kick or attempts to kick' and thus resulting in a direct free kick.

    Sock Tape

I think another reason it is covered so heavily in reports at lower levels is because it is literally black and white. Careless, reckless and excessive force tackles can be argued to a degree - different angles and interpretations of the law can lead to different sanctions for each tackle...

refsix - the Smartwatch and Mobile app for Referees

It's in the Contributory League manual of guidance... I think the idea behind it is that it prevents match fixing and also is just another distraction - after all, once we're at the ground, that should be our focal point until we are finished. Having it turned off means there aren't any...

    5-4 Step Up

I think generally there is more of an emphasis on match control and positioning. Generally, they expect you to have a good level of application of law because you've managed to get to 5 - although just make sure you don't screw up! I'm sure some of the assessors on the forum will be able to...

    Blisters from crabbing

I've not yet tried it, but I've either read on here or on another forum that wearing cotton socks under your refereeing socks can help - might be worth a go? Either that or try to put some zinc oxide tape on the points of your foot that you find are the most prone to getting sore/blisters -...

We might need a little more information. What type of game is it, is it County appointed, youth, adults, etc.? In terms of what to do on the day, make sure you give your assistants pre-match instructions. There are a number of examples on here as to what people say to their assistants. It'll...
