    Fighting and suspended match

Believing you can judge how a game is going to go in the first 15 minutes can be dangerous. Games can flare up in a moment over something as inconsequential as a throw in or some playful banter. Conversely a game that starts off aggressive and bolshy can cool off very easily. As referee you...

The Removal of Players after Injuries

It's the assessment of injury that takes place on the field of play, the treatment ordinarily takes place on the sidelines. The exception being severe injuries and minor treatments where a caution has been given to the player causing such injury. If the treatment is prolonged and a caution is...

    Refreshing piece!

Stopped reading when they started using the word 'rule'. If a bunch of highly paid sports journos (integrity, research, training and all that) can't be bothered to use the correct terminology up front then I can only assume it will be the usual cr4p they spout about making the game fairer and...

First Assessment of new marking season

There is an expectation that the higher you get the tidier the technical bits need to be.

    Manager refuses to shake hand

Some managers won't shake hands regardless of how well they think you have done or whether they have won/lost. You get players that have the same bad attitude to the work we do But then every now and again you get players that restore you faith in humanity. The ones who come over and thank you...

But he could never say he hadn't been warned!

    Sin Bins/Temporary Dismissals

I inderstand the sin bin will be for certain misconduct/discipline issues between the yellow card and a second one. It's an attempt to remove the harsh second yellow syndrome that sees players sent off or in some circumstances not(especially at grass roots). I don't think it will work, too many...

    Semi Final

I wouldn't drop a referee in it without a warning, then a very public verbal warning. The ref doesn't need the problem of selling something he or anyone else didn't see. Likewise as a ref I ask my ARs to provide warnings before getting me involved. If I hear my AR issue a warning and the flag...

    6 second rule.

Big verbal warning to let all players, officials know you are on it. Second warning of equal verocity, then an indirect kick. Its not a call or problem you really want so you hope the warnings do the trick.

    Fighting and suspended match

Never let the next decision be effected by the one before, regardless of how bad it might of been. Evening things up never works.

How has your promotion season gone?

I guess time will tell, there will be a time between knowing whether we are 4s and the test.

How has your promotion season gone?

Fitness test completed in October. Though I know I will need to complete one for the coming season just as the current L4s need to. Start the training for it during Easter. Though this will be bought forward if the dates are announced earlier.

    Binning a player manager

There is a particular manager in a Combined Counties club that names himself as the physio under the misapprehension that he is untouchable. Had great joy in correcting his assertions. Though agree it is not wise to pick a fight with one, better to manage them and hope they heed warnings...

    When will they ever learn?

I may stand to be corrected, but it might be the standard of the referee's report and witness statements that prevent further action being taken in the criminal system. The CPA are not going to pursue cases they don't have a reasonable case of winning. I know the case I was involved in many...

two players on the same team fighting

Brilliant post, and sets the scene for the next time a player swings a fist at someone. Not sure the average player knows too much about the consequences of their actions in this respect. Has certainly opened my eyes.

Some useful words to calm down players/coaches

The simpler the pre kick off brief the better. I get across the stepped approach as per respect. Used to go on about talking to me- not shouting etc etc- but found this set me up for grief. You will develop your own style that works for you over time. Working on the line with better refs will...

    Promotion 17/18

My 74 in Dec didn't look too different, one of the differences being the difficulty of the game. I had neutrals on the line and it was a supply cup game. Where I am we were only assessed on games with neutrals as those with club ar's are deemed too low a standard to test out mettle. The wait...
