    Vegetarianism

I'm a veggie, not really through ethical choice or anything, I've just never been massively keen on meat. My girlfriends is strict veggie so we never have meat in the house anyway. Don't eat fish either. Quorn is a reasonable substitute but the fillets can be very dull unless you jazz it up...

    'Mine! Mine!'

I should point out that the player clearly wasn't trying to deceive, he was shouting 'mine' as he went up for the ball. I think what baffled me was that someone could think that was against the LOTG.

    'Mine! Mine!'

One I thought i'd share from my first open age game the other week. Had a player run up to me in the middle of the game (this bloke is at least 30) as the ball is in play shouting 'Ref, he's shouting "MINE!", you need to book him!'. The game was quite end-to-end and I was chasing the play down...

Glasses - All other refs let him wear them...

I must say i'm hugely surprised at the amount of us that seem to wear glasses when we referee! As I glasses wearer myself (lucky enough to be able to wear soft contacts) I personally wouldn't dream of wearing them to ref, in fact contact lenses are the first thing I make sure are in my bag the...

Not a foul, not a dive

Regarding the original incident, play on I say, unless you think the keeper went in carelessly, recklessly or excessively etc. Re the dissent, spot on in my opinion, we can't be standing for that sort of behaviour, but why did the attacking team decide to tap it back to the keeper? The...

    Junior/Youth Foul throws...

Reffed an U14 game today, my first time doing that sort of age, previously I've only done primary school level through work. I was surprised at the throw ins and just how poor the kids were at taking them, in terms of not coming from behind the head. I took the gentle approach and tried to coach...

    Nasty Injuries....

Last season as a player I had a team mate who nicked an artery near his ankle, bad tackle but not deliberately nasty. Lots of blood pretty quickly, spurting out, the works. Quite frightening really, seen a broken collar bone and arm before that but never that much blood leaving someone as such a...

    First Game Errors...

Have to say regarding the offside issue I found it very tough in my first game on Sunday just gone. Positioning was key for me, I just didn't have the confidence to call something if I wasn't 100% sure so the 'tight' ones were very difficult. I explained that I was calling everything honestly as...

    Open Age First game...

All went seemingly ok in the end. One team turned up 10 minutes before kick off typically, hah. Gave a penalty that could have been viewed as 'soft' but there was definitely contact there and he was no where near the ball. Finished 3-2 in the end, with the losing team scoring with 10 mins to go...

    Minutes silence

Having done a couple of these as a player at Sunday level, do the coin toss as normal, and then bring the players in to stand around the centre circle. Blow your whistle to start the minute, again to end it. Alternatively you could do the coin toss after the minute, up to you i suppose. If you...

    Open Age First game...

It's Open Age this Sunday. Aiming to get there approx 40 mins beforehand...I think this will give me enough time to get everything done?

    Open Age First game...

First fixture is this Sunday after completing the basic course today, feeling reasonably confident at the moment but certain that will change by the weekend. Any hints/tips greatly appreciated!
