    First Game Tomorrow

Hi Stan, welcome. Tomorrow, aim to get there between an hour and 45 minutes before the game. Better to be early with time to kill than be late and be rushing. I would suggest don't be pedantic with kit checks beforehand etc...feel out what the situation requires. If possible, speak to a referee...

    Junior/Youth My game on sunday...

Sounds rough Harry. Glad you're alright after all of that. Just from briefly reading your OP, personally I wouldn't have bothered with the cards after the final whistle. In the situation you were in, I think continuing to card people when they are clearly angry and aggressive towards each other...

Has anyone ever actually been 'Reported?'

I've been told I was to be 'reported' once. Never heard anything of it. Unless there are some really serious allegations being made by either team about you, for instance racist/homophobic comments or some other serious misconduct on your behalf, then I would expect the County FA would have...

    Free kick after drop ball?

I could be wrong on this (and please correct me if I am) but I *believe* the ball isn't in play until it has touched the floor. So no IDFK, just continually retake until they get it right. Had a somewhat similar issue today with a throw-in where yellow took three attempts for the ball to...

    Player makes dramatic save!

It's a clear red card. The player would be expecting it, as would anyone else on the pitch.

Pet hates about your own performance

Reassuring to see so many fellow refs also getting the arms confused for throws, despite obviously knowing which team the throw is for :)

Let's play believe it or not!

I used to watch a lot of Haverfordwest County games as a kid, as I have family down that way. My dad tells me that back in the day the Welsh Prem and Conference were roughly similar standard, but as the Conference has moved on the Welsh Prem has stagnated. No money in football down that way.

    Excercise

Braver man than me! Nice hot shower personally, especially if it's been freezing out.

    It was a cold one......

I was reffing on a very exposed pitch yesterday, so decided to go crazy on the layers. In this order: sleeveless base layer; puma black tech t-shirt; long sleeve base layer; ref shirt. Unfortunately, the base layer on top of a looser tech t-shirt made it roll up when i ran, so i looked like i...

    First Game -- Not pretty

Sorry to hear that you've had such a negative experience. I'll share some tips from my (also limited) experience of senior football... The 'push' - not sure if he has pushed you here, if he actually pushed you, then I would have abandoned the game there and then and reported to the league. Do...

Dealing with a player after the final whistle

Firstly, I wasn't reffing and as the referee had clearly heard it as well I was in no position to seek a card for it from the referee who had decided to take no action. Secondly, while I would agree with you in principle, this situation was really pretty hostile and it was probably best for us...

Chelsea Game - Player prevents card been shown

Caution and the absolute sternest possible of words, with the captain present, along the lines of 'Don't you dare give me a reason to give you another, because you've really pi**ed me off now,' although most probably more politely than that! If that player even dared to argue with me on a...

Dealing with a player after the final whistle

Had an incident after a game on Saturday where a player approached all three officials in the centre circle immediately after the final whistle (I was lining). His team had been beaten 1-0 by bottom of the league and the game had been a real challenge to officiate with lots of flashpoints...

How can a player get to adult football NOT knowing what dissent is?

I had a great chat with the ref I was working with today, in a particularly mouthy game where there were a few cards for mouthing off which players seemed to think they are entitled to do. Perhaps it would be easier if the conversation went like this... Player: "You're a joke, ref!" Ref: "Yes...

    Game drinks

Not used it when reffing, but before a half marathon or a 10k race I usually have a shot of beetroot juice an hour and a half before hand. It's absolutely rank but proven to help with endurance. http://www.beet-it.com/ - this is a concentrated beetroot juice that helps to avoid the toilet trips...

    Best Referee ever???

Reminds me a bit of a bloke who we used to get regularly back in the north east for my Sunday games. Must have been late 60s/early 70s, very vocal and aggressive about it too. Spent most of his time in the centre third of the pitch, never really ventured beyond that. I remember a few times him...

    Changing room...have a laugh

Youth football I've never had a changing room with the obvious exceptions of academy games. We're pretty lucky for open age round here, always a changing room and only once have I turned up and it's been locked. Sadly that was one of the few occasions I hadn't put the shorts on under the...

Abandonment or Final Whistle? (Plus referee assault)

Ridiculous. Hang tough mate and hopefully this will all be sorted out PROPERLY by your county when the facts become clear.

Junior/Youth But she won the ball first....

I had an incident in the box today where there was minimal contact, never a penalty. Player didn't even go down. Attacking player stops, looks at me and says 'Ref, how is that not a penalty?', so I say (when the ball's gone for a GK) 'Would you expect me to give that as a free kick outside the...
