    Criticisms of Referees

if Fernando Torres misses a glorious chance, we will quite rightly point at him and say "that was ****" if Howard Webb misses an obvious foul in the penalty area, why should we not debate his performance accordingly? there is absolutely no foundation in the suggestion that we, as...

    Ref overrules AR

a very good point monkey, although the ball ended up in the stingys so my flag wasn't altogether necessary in determining that it was out of play :D

    Ref overrules AR

easier said than done really though - unless you're a total masochist it's very difficult to enjoy abuse from players/fans i think what Steve is saying is that it's nice when you know you have given the right decision and the players/fans can see that. in the scenario he describes, the ref has...

    Cup Final - 1st Assistant

i filled in as 2nd Assistant at the last minute yesterday. there were no supporters on my side of the pitch so it was quite boring and quiet if i'm honest. my positioning was ok and i felt i got all of my decisions right apart from one very marginal call on a player possibly coming back from...

i'm sure that's a joke, but your xenophobia is slightly unnecessary and sets a bad example to the board's many younger members.

    Cautioning

I write the number and time in my book and show the red. Both of my reds this season have had yellow cards in the same game, so I already knew the player's name.

    First Impressions

i usually strike a balance for league games, going for smart jeans or chinos with a polo shirt. i want to look professional but turning up in a shirt and tie in my league would make people think i'm a d!ckhead.

    Cup Final - 1st Assistant

I got an email through last night to say I've been appointed as 1st assistant for a cup final on 24th May. I'm pleased with this as it's my first season. Having only run the line on one previous occasion though, does anyone have any advice?

for reasons such as these, i appreciate the rule in my league which is that CARs only flag for ball in and out of play. often it's difficult enough for them to grasp that.

    A back-pass? Or not

As a goalkeeper, if Alex as the referee had told an opposition player to shoot when I was off my line, I would have been looking at a long ban for the abuse I would have given him. I hope that's a joke, because it's a ridiculous thing to do. Back on topic, if the intention of the defender was...

    Advice?

interesting issue. i know i will get criticised for this, but my mindset is that i only use cards when i absolutely have to, rather than looking for an opportunity to card people. not saying that's what you do, but my approach is definitely "do i have to card him?". the reason for this is that...

    Implication that you're a cheat

my game this saturday is a team i have had problems with on two previous occasions. you might recall i mentioned in another thread that i had advised the captain to take the referees' course if he wanted to better understand the difference between a careless and a reckless tackle! the captain...

    OVER !!

i've heard "over" a thousand times in my playing career, as in "step over" meaning to let the ball run for a player behind i get the constant gripe when i'm refereeing local league football about players shouting "mine", "leave it" etc. I've never penalised it but players continue to complain.

    goalkeeper parrying the ball

IDFK if he dribbles, but if he's just stuck a hand out to keep it in play and then picked it up straight away then that's fine by me.

    goalkeeper parrying the ball

he hasn't committed an offence here. if he parries it and dribbles, that's an IDFK but not if he picks it straight up
