    New Write On Card System

Good advice and I follow the correct procedure. However, even at grass roots level, I believe (only in extreme cases) a quick red card can work for you and potentially prevent a mass confrontation. It's worked a couple of times for me; once on a 5-4 assessment. The assessor didn't like it but...

Cosgrove Send Off: An Appeal - Really?

When you see a player running 20+ metres at speed to probably make a tackle your alarm bells should be ringing and you have to be putting in a sprint to get a good view of the challenge. In real time it looks terrible. In slow motion we see the contact is with the trailing leg against the...

    Specialist level 4 assistants

I would have been keen on this. I feel I was a better assistant than referee (a couple on here might think that means I'm a terrible referee!!!) and would have liked to stay on contrib lines for longer than I did.

    I found him... LWR!!

This is one area where the local RA is great. At ours (and I assume all the others) we cover law changes at our August meeting every season. A number of our members are the grass roots referees (old and young) who have no desire to progress and they do keep up to date with changes.

    Coaches not knowing the LOTG

Not good advice from your observer. We've discussed this on here before. If anyone asks if the keeper can pick it up I will shout out yes or no. I do look to the keeper and give a thumbs up or shake of the head but I don't shout instructions unprompted. We're referees not coaches.

    Goalkeeper Six second law.

Absolutely. The time I penalised, the keeper had been reminded on a couple of occasions. In the incident I shouted to get on with it but the keeper then walked 10 yards across the penalty area so, although everyone heard me they were still surprised when the indirect free kick was given. What...

    Goalkeeper Six second law.

Only once. Probably won't ever again! It didn't end well.

    Managing being mobbed by players

I think I've posted this before. I always keep a cheap selection of electrical tape in my bag. If during the warm up I notice a problem with sock tape I ask them to sort it. If they say there's none of the correct colour left I tell them I have some they can use. Non confrontational and...

    Starting out at 41

Go for it and enjoy it. I started at 42 and got level 4 at 49. Lost it at 50 down to fitness test but got back to level 4 at 52. If you're in Manchester area you'll be looking at step 7 or 6 for level 4 but the journey up there will be good. Good luck, hope you enjoy it.

It got a bit tasty but we've had worse!

Junior County Cup Final Dress Code

Whether it's step 7 middle or line, division 2 or reserves I always turn up wearing shirt and ties (& trousers of course). I'll wear a suit to our cup final on Friday night. Sunday league and other Saturday leagues obviously don't require this unless it's a final.

    Club Marks

Sadly club marks are important. They count towards cup finals and top of the league appointments. We had a league meeting (curry night|) in March where a selection of referees' club marks were discussed. The secretary asked "cup game; X rovers v Y united - home team awarded 90, away team...

    Commentating on the game

There's a time and place for everything. The most common time I will use "good tackle" is when two players have gone in hard but fair and just got on with the game without either appealing for a free kick.

    First step 6 middle

In the step 7 leagues up here it's level 4s. Occasionally, level 5s are appointed (usually on early round FA Cup when the 4s are all taken) but they tend to choose refs who were level 4 until recently. I never understood why 4s don't do step 5 up here either.

    Lino went for a p*ss

I'm a referee not a park keeper. I have enough to do watching what's going on with 22 players. Outside the lines, by the trees is really not my domain. Also, if you're saying you've never had a wee where you shouldn't.................................

    Lino went for a p*ss

This is grass roots football. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't even notice they had gone for a pee. I have enough to do trying to manage 22 players on my own, I really don't have time to worry about incontinent CARs. Report? Get a grip.

    Millwall v Brighton

She is a really good assistant referee. In fact, I think the Premier League assistants are absolutely top drawer. This was a very tight call and it's unfair to criticise even the best with such close offside/not offside decisions in real time. I most certainly wouldn't lose any sleep in not...

    Wolves v Utd

Lindelof's tackle was a red for me. It could easily have trapped the opponent's lower leg with a disastrous outcome. Rashford's, although two footed and ugly, was nowhere near the opponent and so posed no danger. Yellow was fine.
