Dutch Referee Blog - Laws of the Game Quiz 2024-2025 #3 December

I would think the crossbar one comes under 'shows a lack of respect for the game/unsporting behaviour'. There's nothing directly in law regarding the ACTUAL offence, as far as I can see.

    Offside/DOGSO/SPA

I know it's a few days old, but it's been on my mind. For me, it's covered pretty well in law here - a player in an offside position is moving towards the ball with the intention of playing the ball and is fouled before playing or attempting to play the ball, or challenging an opponent for...

    Everton v Brentford

And this doesn't help us at lower levels, trying to sell things like this as SFP when players all claim "didn't mean it, trying to get the ball" etc. We need to look less at what football (fans etc) expects, and more at actually being allowed to apply the laws proficiently.

    Southampton Vs Chelsea hair pull

    Start at 1:40. Thoughts?

    GK interference in WSL

Then allow a bit more time for the keeper to set herself and the wall properly. Depending on how the game/team/players had been in the game already, you could be looking at caution (s) without warning TBF.

    Offside Offence Or Goal?

I would agree with this. If you felt the goalkeeper 'saved' the ball for any reason then it's an offside offence. If you felt the goalkeeper deliberately played the ball, then no offence. You just have to make that judgement call in the few seconds you have available unless you buy some time...

    Looking at Social Media

First few corners or free kicks into the attacking area, let them know you're there. Then you can start letting off a bit. Temperature of the game as well may dictate how much you need to shout. I find I do the first bit above and then every so often at the drop zone from say a goal kick, I'll...

    ‘Easy’ game

Yes. I can't recall the exact details but I remember coming off wishing more games were like it... Then thinking no, actually, I want to be tested with my decision making etc! One every so often is nice though.

    Whistle for free kick restart

Don't use "when you're ready". Just in case they try and be smart and not be ready for ages. Then you've got an issue of potential time wasting and opposition moaning etc. I shout "it's on you player/kicker" as I run away. Then when you've got to your position, you can start the "let's get...

    Remembering who you have booked

I tend to find that if a player is already on a caution and commits another foul, the opposition will often let you know they're on a yellow just after it happens... Has helped me a couple of times.

    County cup appointments

Last season I helped out at short notice on a couple of county cup games ( one was a QF and one was a SF). These were the rough distances involved... (No expenses last season). 44 miles ew for the QF, currently says about an hour and quarter driving each way. Can't remember the match fee. This...

    Constant appealing

Other stock phrases for pushing in the back include "it's a touch, not a foul - letting him know he's there". "Other player/colour/number was backing in as well". "There's no arm extension/push, there's nothing there players". I find these work well for me. Shows you've seen the arms out/touch...

    Sending off manager / assistant

Consider if they are also classed as physio, things might work slightly differently... They can potentially stay but any more issues from them and game is at risk of being abandoned.

    Man City v Arsenal

An indirect free kick is awarded if a goalkeeper, inside their penalty area, commits any of the following offences: controls the ball with the hand/arm for more than six seconds before releasing it Copied from the LOTG 24/25. It's definitely still 6 seconds, I can't recall ever seeing...

    Crystal Palace Vs Manchester United

I was literally about to post the definition of SFP. There's also the definition of PIADM. Playing in a dangerous manner is any action that, while trying to play the ball, threatens injury to someone (including the player themself) and includes preventing a nearby opponent from playing the...

    4th Official duties confirmed...

Thank you. Step 2 at home. Google tells me one AR is level 3, and MOAS tells me the other is a 4, so there IS a 3 on the line. Good to know. Should be an interesting experience for me.
