    FA Vase - dress code?

In my area, I’d be expected to wear a suit and tie for this. If in doubt, dress up not down. But ask the ref and they’ll guide you. And congrats on the appointment.

    Broken Corner Flag

Play on. While I understand why at a higher level it may seem unacceptable not to have all four corner flags, it’s easier to manage at that level without them given there are three (or four or more) sets of eyes on the field anyway.

    Match fee for friendlies

I just ask for the standard rate for the league they play in, which where I am at grassroots level is generally a £50 flat fee from this season. I’ve had a few teams moan that other refs do it cheaper for friendlies. In which case, I reply, hire them, not me. At the end of the day we’re a...

    Open Age Own goal celebration

This is why I love the grassroots. Don’t card for this. There’s probably an argument that technically it’s not a “celebration” so it doesn’t break law 12?

    Friendly Matches and Cards

I’ve only had one friendly so far this pre-season but we had 3 yellows and a sin bin for good measure - and I was more lenient than usual. Yes there was the odd “is that going through, ref?” at the end, but no major complaints. If they don’t want a ref at Sunday league level pre-season, they...

What do you use for the coin flip

Order of preference: 10p 2p 1p 50p Blade of grass in hand behind back (until it was very recently outlawed!)

    Match fees - again

I think it all comes down to what you’re in it for, but personally I would turn that down. Perhaps in less blunt terms! I’ve recently had a baby so I’m planning to just do grassroots this season. £50 for a middle is just fine with me. Supply league lines are £35 and personally this isn’t worth...

    Outstanding Discipline Report on WGS

Yeah I’ve had this a couple of times. Doesn’t hurt to check with your CFA, but WGS has been known for having the odd issue!

Back pass that wasn't but now is - (to GK)

As previously said: But I think each situation should be judged on its merit, eg how far the keeper has to come to collect it, speed the ball is played.

    Handball

Only IFAB would need a 76-page document to explain what handball is

Back pass that wasn't but now is - (to GK)

Also agree with @RustyRef. If there are no appeals, we’re playing on

Back pass that wasn't but now is - (to GK)

It also depends how you read the law itself. Eg is the LOTG meant to mean - That ball has been deliberately kicked to the goalkeeper. - Or that the ball has been “deliberately kicked” (eg not an accident) and ended up with the keeper. Either way, I think in this instance, as described, most...

Refereeing a Team within your Own Football Club

I did this for a couple of seasons when I was 17/18 if the league couldn’t find a neutral referee themselves. While it’s a helpful thing to do as a last resort, be prepared to upset some mates! I remember having to send off one of my team mates for DOGSO… not ideal!

2022/23 Laws of the game - hard copy

I’ll take one if it’s not too late, @Ross. Thanks for organising

    Handball or let it slide?

Just got home from a well-mannered 0-0. I was AR2 and this happened on my near side, with the referee nearby with a clear view. In approx the 80th min the keeper collects the ball on the floor in the penalty area after a bit of a scramble following a corner. The keeper stands up and offers...

    First match back

Good luck everyone - not that you’ll need it! 2 middles for me tomorrow and it’s my first game since October... and first since Covid... hope the lungs make it! Buzzing.

    Grass Roots Season Curtailment (?)

Grassroots games lined up for me for Easter Saturday and Sunday! First games in the UK for a few years - couldn’t be more up for it. Pray good the weather holds out!

Kane "cute". One word for it.

Penalty. Yes he’s looking for it. He still gets fouled.

Back after 5 years + sin bins

Out of interest are you finding players understand if they can/can’t be subbed/can’t return to the game if they’ve been binned twice?I’ve revised it and understand it now but I imagine grassroots managers and players may be less across it.
