    Move ref!

If this is happening enough that it is causing annoyance to you, and in particular to post about it, it would imply that you are genuinely getting in the way of the players, and should review your positioning.

    GK handball outside area

If a DOGSO consideration results in a discussion, such as this one.... it wasn't DOGSO. The key word is 'Obvious'.

Promotion criteria level 5 to 4

They've already tightened the demotion criteria for L4 as part of this. DE or ED can get you demoted outside of your free year. There is also a generic set of conditions such as 'fitness' and 'administration' that can make a L4 eligible for demotion. If they get the throughput they may well...

    2 players pushing-restart of play

One of those situational and 'go with your gut' instincts. The good thing here is that if you _do_ go with the drop-ball aspect, you can communicate pretty well how exasperated you are that you needed to stop the game to deal with their handbags (and thus sell the caution nicely). This is...

Open Age Would you have done the same?

This depends on your area. So far this season as a L3, I've refereed six contrib-level games, and had 2 lines.

    Kick-Off

Also remember that you can preventatively manage this right at the beginning. After the toss when the players who are kicking off come in, just mention it quietly to them at that point. Simple, no fuss, and doesn't make you look over-officious as when having to shout it from 10-15 yards away.

    5-4 Assessment

From the wording, I'll go with: AoL: 3.5 (could have been 3.0 depending on weight of pushing/holding) MC: 4.0 Pos: 2.5 (Significant development advice) Alert: 3.5 (could have been 3.0 depending on weight of not being proactive) Comms: 4.0 Team: 3.5 Advantage: 3.5 Mark: 72 (max)

Open Age Would you have done the same?

Being an AR is a completely different skill set. It's important to do what you can to enjoy it: It's an invaluable learning tool. I'm always thinking to myself, in a positive way, "How did this referee get promoted?": Clearly there's something he is doing that pleases both assessors and clubs...

Would you have allowed that ?

    Well done!

You don't have to know the score to know who's losing.....

Did you attempt to proactively manage the manager prior to just telling him at the end of the game that he would be reported?

    Kick-Off

Yes, you should always make sure of this.

    Assessment

If the intention is to reflect that tackles that 'endangered the safety of an opponent' were not appropriately sanctioned, then that would explain the lower than expected mark. Failure to apply Law correctly. However, the wording of the assessment is poor in terms of getting that message...

    Junior/Youth Dishing out cards

Empathy for the game, such as identifying the mood of a team losing 8-1, does not mean you should ever sacrifice match control. If you are receiving 'countless' sarcastic comments etc then it indicates it has gone too far. Get hold of it early. Step them up. First comment, have a word...

Open Age Would you have done the same?

I cautioned a player for Dissent yesterday. Easy one - he shouted at my NAR from 10 yards away following the (correct) flagging of a foul. In a different temperature game, it might have been a stern talking to instead. That would be my call to make. When I'm lining, I will be doing my best...

Open Age Would you have done the same?

Assistants don't request cards. They give the facts. The referee makes the decision. My pre-match talk includes this scenario. The reason being is that each assistant might have different tolerance levels. I have to ensure the same tolerance for both teams. I will protect my assistants, of...

Based on the description, this feels like a very harsh red card for me.

    First assessment of the season

A development point in one assessment could be a blip. When it appears in two assessments, you need to take heed of it. Movement and positioning is very important in refereeing. You need to be in the right place at the right time. Please take stock of what you are being advised. You...

    warm up

Current routine (always subject to change when I steal ideas !!!): If all is going to plan, head out at 2:30pm. Lap or two of the pitch at a very gentle jog (may not be laps as such, depends on where the teams are warming up). Minute or so for simple stretches as required. Shuttles (each...

    Fitness test failure

    1. Don't do any high intensity work the day before a fitness test. That includes a game. 2. Of that test, about start number 7 tends to be the point where you start to feel a bit fed up, and have to dig in. Then it gets easier. Especially once you realise you are half-way through the test...
