    Fitness Help!

To follow on from the themes, if you are injured, sort out the injury before trying to increase your performance to pass the test in question. Get a recommendation for a good sports physio, and also a running coach. These sorts of things are usually down to technique or TMTS (Too Much Too Soon!)

    Rest or Improve?

I switch into pre-season training the moment the season ends. I enjoy running so it lets me concentrate on 'normal' running without needing to schedule things around the high-intensity of games. I'll be doing a series of 10k races, for example, so training around that. This includes a weekly...

Ladies Penalising 6 seconds without a warning

No caution required. The IDFK is the punishment for this offence.

    Sold Refscall buzzer flags

I don't think leagues can ban you from using them (I've never encountered this). I'd never lend mine to CARs though. Personally, I found buzzer flags very useful at L5 and particularly at L4. That said, I also did games with CARs to keep my hand in with NOT using them so I didn't get lazy...

Ladies Penalising 6 seconds without a warning

Your job is to facilitate the game. Proactive communication to avoid surprises is a huge part of that.

    Sold Refscall buzzer flags

I have been informed that they do indeed work! If anyone is interested drops me a PM I'm happy to hook you up directly with the referee so that you can get any further information as required.

    Gel Supplements

You don't need gel supplements for 5k, or even 10k for that manner. Get your nutrition and hydration right before the race. And after. Job done.

    Junior/Youth U18 Cup Final

Referee the game. Not the occasion.

What do we think of this guy?

Here we go... 1. No foul, keeper has knocked the ball clear then the attacker runs into him. Keeper has been on the weights (or pies?) and comes off better. However, given the attacker has gone down like a sack of spuds, it's potentially a serious injury so play needs to be stopped. Referee...

    Sold Refscall buzzer flags

Hi, A fellow referee is selling a set of Refscall buzzer flags that he has no need for any more. He is looking for £100. I've attached a picture! These are ALSO on eBay. If interested, give me a shout and I'll hook you up.

    Whats the best watch?

This is the correct answer. Casio RFT-100 as main watch. Garmin Forerunner 620 as secondary for fitness tracking. I did try a Spintso. Nice device but unimpressive reliability: The buttons rusted up within a season.

    Promotions

It has been known. Took me two years though ;-) From my own chatting to a senior FA source, typically 96% of promotions to Level 3 were due to the referee being in Band A for both assessments (primary criteria) and club marks. In short: AA - 'good chance' of being promoted (Remember: They...

    Level 4 Query

The two are a package. Technically, you are not a 'supply league referee' but rather on the National List of Contributory League Assistants, which has supply league refereeing thrown in. As you will have seen, you generally do more lines than middles at L4 (to an extreme extent in some areas...

just when I thought the season was over....

Standard red cards aren't eligible for personal hearings. Must be a bit more to it than that. Context?

Open Age Offside goal in a final

Disagree. The referee lost the game because he gave a decision that was wrong!

Open Age Offside goal in a final

No, it's not. Reaching the correct decision has absolute priority, leads to credibility, and enhances match control. In a recent game, I (completely incorrectly) flagged a player for offside. My view / decision making led to me believing the ball had been headed by an attacking player to the...

Open Age Offside goal in a final

I disagree with (1). If the assistant raises their flag the referee should not automatically stop play. The flag is an indication to the referee that the assistant feels an offside offence has been committed. The referee makes the final call. In these 'two player' situations there are...

ACCUSED OF RACISM ON THE FIELD OF PLAY

I was wondering how long it would be before the phrase 'politically correct' came into this ;-)
