Spectator Sent Off (with Red Card!)

Well, I say spectator.... He wasn't even there!!

My next door neighbour used to manage one of the age groups of one of our local teams until they aged out this summer just gone.
His son plays for a younger age group.
At his sons game, apparently the game was very feisty. It was a cup game where its more national than local so you can imagine my local towns team had a fair bit of travelling and had to encounter a local ref to that particular area.

Claims from the son is that the ref favoured the more local team, with cards being issued like confetti. Yes, they also lost.
I was having a chilled day with my neighbour (the father) before I had to go away for the week for my new job.
Today, whilst speaking with him, he said he received a report that he, personally, received a red card.
He is not mentioned on the coaching team so can not even say he took name from team sheet.
He was not even at the game to receive said card.
So, in theory, if he was there this is.. he would have been a spectator. I didn't think you could send off a spectator (complete with card).
This supposedly happened after full time, on the pitch.

Whether someone there just gave their name as him I do not know but seems very strange to claim that he took the name from the spectator.

But surely as referee, you can not send a spectator off. You report as an extraordinary event.
And if you do that, you can not just guess the name.

Seems very odd. Not sure where they'd have got his name from (as the younger age group the son plays for now is the same age group as what the father was managing this time last year, it could be system not updated properly and he just put the managers name from a drop down maybe) to even send a red card misconduct to him.

He said he won't appeal it as appealing it would technically mean he was there, but will let the league know it is a case of mistaken identity.
Even I can vouch for the fact he was not there.

Similarly, three seasons ago I received an Observation for a match I wasn’t at. Had an okay game.

Might try not being appointed more often. I won’t tell ProRef I was at Old Trafford this weekend though 😂

(Edit to clarify: wasn’t ever appointed to the match in question.)
