looks to me like messi is trying to avoid the contact, but the contact he makes is clearly quite dangerous and something we have been seeing red cards for

i dont think it's a red but wouldn't have been surprised to see VAR getting involved

For me it's one where the on field decision stands regardless. It is nasty, but I'd be happy enough with a caution on a lack of force basis.

I think the challenge itself is reckless and nothing more. Certainly not enough force for me to think it's clear SFP so imo the onfield decision has to stand. I reckon the same would have happened had it been given as a red as there is contact with the studs so it's just not a C&O error. I'm surprised that he wasn't even cautioned though.

I’m fine with no VAR intervention but I think the preferred outcome should be red card. With studs flush to the back of the Achilles, little force is needed to endanger the safety of the opponent. Kinda surprised people are thinking yellow. Those I’ve spoken to irl think red.

I just think Marciniak’s bar for both fouls and misconduct was way too high. Besides the Messi challenge, I felt like there were at least three other pretty obvious cautions missed just in the first half.

Definitely a “do not try this at home” approach from Marciniak last night. He got away with it, but likely only because he has a reputation preceding him and a lot of players on the pitch who know and respect him.
