I'm assuming that the VAR called ref to monitor to suggest penalty and not to over rule corner for a goal kick?

Clear penalty for me that one. Mane clearly challenges in a careless manner.

The Ref Stop
As soon as he didn’t give it and he became aware of the VAR review he had the look of a man who wasn’t going to change his mind. He stated (I believe) the attacker initiated the contact!

Stonewall penalty everyday of the week 🤷🏻‍♂️

The ref for this game was almost certainly one of the strongest contenders for the final going into the tournament. He's now one of the strongest contenders for the first flight home 😂

They only delay if the adverts on Fox aren't finished
I know it is fun to make fun of Fox, but I am aware of absolutely no evidence that remotely suggests Fox had anything to do with the breaks. Fox had its contract already--it got the contract for this WC as part of the change in when the last one was going to be after they had signed the contract for that. And with hindsight they way underpaid. So Fox had no leverage to have commercials added, and FIFA, feeling it had a really bad deal with Fox, had no incentive to do something nice for Fox. From all available evidence, this is all on FIFA--perhaps with an eye to selling the rights next time.

Oh, and they don't wait for Fox. In the opening game, Fox missed the restarts after the water break.

In one game the match delegate was seen instructing the officials to delay while looking at an iPad/tablet. I naturally assumed it was something to do with commercials but I stand corrected if not (or maybe it just wasn't Fox). These "hydration" breaks are doing my head in though. In the LOTG, drinks breaks are 1 minute, and cooling breaks 1.5 to 3. If they're going to force utter nonsense, they could at least use the correct terminology.

IIRC, the first announcements included cooling breaks, but since that is so absurd in a temperature controlled dome, they changed to hydration. (FWIW, I don't care what they call them--it's just absurd and a pretty big change. And the theory that it is only fair to do in all if done in some seems clearly post hoc rationalization, not a reason.)

Top referee, excellent decision. We don’t need VAR on this incident, the referee made the correct decision. Certainly a name for the later rounds.

Well, he demonstrably did not make the correct decision. He gave a corner kick and it was corrected to a GK as the defender never touched the ball. With the defender not touching the ball and taking down the attacker, I have a hard time not calling that a foul. I guess we'll see what FIFA thinks of his performance by what assignments he (and the VAR) get going forward. Though the fact that France still won means the call, missed or not, will have less weight and publicity. If the game had ended in a draw, it would be a major talking point.

While he started with a head start and was discussed as a finals candidate, I have trouble with today's game supporting that. I thought he foul standard was mushy, including the clear miss on the stepped on player who had to sit out.

There was a guy on the sideline telling the referee when he could restart
There's a guy (or girl) on the sideline at every single televised game no matter where in the world who tells the referee, often via the 4th official, when they can restart. They are the broadcast company's floor manager, that is part of their job, i.e. to make sure that the game isn't restarted before the broadcast is ready.
