The Ref Stop

CAR's who know more than referees - don't you just love 'em

Level 7 Referee
I was the home team CAR for an U18 league game yesterday

At half-time, I told the referee that the away team captain had a plaster covering the lower part of his left ear and I was thinking that it might be covering up an ear stud/bar, whatever.

The referee, who had mentioned previously that he was running the line on County games this season, explained to me that it was o.k. to wear it as long as it was covered up.

I shook my head sadly, said, 'No, it's not o.k.' and walked away.

I've asked the league secretary if she could send a reminder out to all their refs and managers to say that players cannot wear jewellery and that covering it up is not an option.

Lol one of those rare occasions when the CAR does know more than the referee!!

God, don't you hate know it all CARs!!!!!!!

;)

Just take it with a pinch of salt and move on.

Got to remember the man in the middle is the main man. Even if Webb is running one line and Collina the other!

I was at a game on Saturday watching a young ref I am mentoring. The CAR was in fact a qualified referee as he told the referee and all the parents on the line a good 15 times during the first half he then went mad at an offside decision that the referee correctly called because he claimed the attacker was offside (which he was) but his player actually played the ball through to him with a miss kick. This "qualified referee" was absolutely adamant that he is still offside irrelevant of who played the ball through, eventually I simply said "listen mate either you are not a qualified referee or you should seriously think about re-taking your basic course because that is a very simple law and if you don't know that then that is a little worrying, now get off the young lad's back and let him get on with the game". Cue sniggers from the parents he was trying to impress and he was as good as gold for the rest of the game. Maybe shouldn't have said it but couldn't help myself!!

Perhaps you should have just had a word with the lad you were mentoring about what possibilities are open to him when dealing with an unhappy CAR.

Anyone who has a word with my assistant when I'm reffing and I'm aware of it or made aware of it will not be my favourite person and I would take the appropriate steps to get the spectator off his or her back

Of course I spoke to him about how to deal with an unhappy CAR amongst other things. I wouldn't have said a word however this was his first ever game and he really could have done without it!!

so you thought you'd try to humiliate someone else to make it right....and then probably told your mentoree, if there is such a word, what you'd done

Sorry if I'm misunderstanding your post but in my eyes (the way I understand what you're saying) the CAR was right...

The lotg don't mention how the ball is played.... Just that when the ball is touched OR played the player is commiting am offence if they interfere or touch ball etc...

Unless I'm not understanding your post, in law the CAR was right to say it WAS offside... Miss kickk or not... The laws don't mention " deliberately" playing the ball to am opponent unless I'm mistaken

I understood it as a defender (on the CARs team) kicked it through to the attacker with the miss kick.

@haywain - new first game referee and having a CAR (and a qualified referee no less) abusing him, when he is wrong in law anyway. If I was the mentor I might have been having a word there myself. Being wrong is one thing (we all make mistakes) abusing a refereeing colleague publicly and a new referee at that is another - rule 1.

Standing up for someone getting abuse at the hands of someone who should know better or to phrase it slightly more accurately, a bully. A lone ref (and a new ref at that) and a CAR with a bunch of parents. As adults we don't really label other adults as bullies often, but that is what it sounds like to me.

If the bully gets put in his place, good.

To clarify, this has no relevance to the OP - I agree with your actions there. :)

Couldn't agree more with your sentiment about standing up to bullies, Monkey, ...putting aside the fact that you don't actually know what was said and how it was said in the o/p scenario, but there is a right way of doing it and a wrong way. on this occasion, Oliver didn't go about it in the right way.

two wrongs rarely make a right and it's just a little bit sad that some people can't, or refuse to, acknowledge that

Haywain you are contradicting yourself, on the one hand you have said we don't know what was actually said but then you say oliver didn't got about it the right way.

Who are you to tell me that?

For the record I didn't go seeking an argument with this fella, he wanted an audience to vent his frustrations, he brought me into his conversation and I then voiced an opinion. Which I would do time and time again in support of a colleague, especially one who has asked for my support

Oliver

I formed my opinion that you didn't go about it in the right way on the basis of your own reported comments, i.e.

"listen mate either you are not a qualified referee or you should seriously think about re-taking your basic course because that is a very simple law and if you don't know that then that is a little worrying, now get off the young lad's back and let him get on with the game". Cue sniggers from the parents he was trying to impress and he was as good as gold for the rest of the game. Maybe shouldn't have said it but couldn't help myself!!

No contradiction there

As for who I am to tell you that.......hmmmm

That's correct no contradiction there but there was in the rest of the post which I pointed out and you forget to quote. Let's leave it shall we I was there and in my opinion did the right thing and would do it again, you weren't but disagree anyway. Do not put words in my mouth either haywain, as you did earlier

Okay, I think enough opinions have been shared. Agree to disagree gents.

Funny thing is, you both agree on the fundamentals.
