Career change!80 notes a game?
I heard that referees are paid a lot80 notes a game?
I think you were basing it on observer fees tbh and not realising that us refs are only paid a small percentage of the money observers get!I heard that referees are paid a lotand won a bet with myself as to who would comment first

I am not saying it is personally. I am quite happy to pay.. in fact I’ve already registered for next season, but whilst we are probably in the majority; there will be a minority who see it as an affront.£10 extra per season is not a big jump. Even more so when you take into account that the registration fee has remained static for over 20 years. Using the Bank of England's inflation calculator, £20 in 2006 would be over £35 now.
It looks like the increase is not only registration fees but now newly promoted Referees having to pay for their kit to help finance the introduction of an online learning platform, increased face-to-face CPD opportunities, and for the first time a summer roadshow programme, offering practical training and development to referees and assistant referees across the country. In addition, there has been a substantial increase in match day coaching, online one-to-one support, as well as dedicated fitness, nutrition and wellbeing support initiatives (copied and pasted from a different posting on this forum).I am not saying it is personally. The second part of my point was about the CPD. Any news or idea on what’s coming? Would be nice to know what exactly we are paying extra for?
I understand the FA significantly overspent their Referees development/training budget in 2024/25 &/or the year before.£200k in the scheme of things doesn’t seem like it would put much of a dent in the FA’s coffers.
Begs the question why the FA haven’t sought out sponsorship for the kit at National League to Step 5/6, if the cost is that much of an issue?
It’s not as if introducing sleeve sponsors at that level would be far fetched, as many other National FA’s already do this, even down to grassroots level in some cases.
What would the opportunity to advertise on sleeves of referees outside of PGMOL spheres potentially be worth?
Surely got to be worth more than the £200k they’ve saved? Especially as visibility would be present at all National League and semi-pro football? Likely to be seen on TV, streaming, photos etc as well as from fans/players.
If you could get even £300k-£500k
in sponsorship per year, the cost would cover the current kit bill for each referee and deliver more towards coaching/observer/training costs too.
Just a thought and probably pie in the sky but think what could be achieved if the effort was put it to get that kind of money in?
Devil's advocate, who would be paying to put their logo on the sleeves of referees at steps 2 to 6? Crowds are minimal, there's no mainstream TV coverage, what exactly would they be getting for their up to £500k that you suggested?£200k in the scheme of things doesn’t seem like it would put much of a dent in the FA’s coffers.
