team A is in the attack phase and player X is in an offside position when the ball from player Y is passed to player Z who is onside. X either runs back to an onside position or is placed onside by a defender. .Z then does a backward cross to X who scores iIs this a legal goal?.
The law just says offside is then called. but mentions nothing else about subsequent position of X nor whether tge pass to X is forwards or backwards

Sounds highly like the situation where Celtic scored their 2nd goal.
If not, have a look at that goal and you should get a good feel for this law.

I'm not sure what you mean by, "The law just says offside is then called." I don't see anything to that effect, either in the text of Law 11 or in the Guidelines section.
