Level 7 Referee
Cant imagine this has inspired many to become a referee tonight. These types of games always made me want to quit

The Ref Stop
It always makes me cringe when a player confronts an apponent and cover their mouth so their lip movement can't be seen.

At the risk of derailing this thread, it would be helpful (for me at least, and possibly others) if someone could outline what the “racism” protocol is, and confirm that it applies to all levels of football, ie I would apply it on the Dog & Duck league on a Sunday morning the same way

The FA have a set protocol for discrimatory events, which involves stopping the game, informing everyone what's occuring, if it is a spectator that is alleged to have made the comments and they can be identified then you'd have them removed, but if they can't you can ask for increased stewarding / club official presence in that area. Take statements from the player who made the allegation and any witnesses. Obviously if the ref hears it and it's from another player / team official we can take disciplinary action and also make notes etc. Check everyone is ok to restart. Just make sure there's plenty of notes taken of the facts etc and adjust accordingly /use common sense if this is a dog and duck game. Not sure about the protocol once it gets to top levels but wouldn't imagine it changes much.

Should covering your mouth with the intent of obscuring your lip movement when speaking to match officials or opponents be an offence?

Just throwing it out there?

Agree with the intent of the suggestion, but a player could be saying anything personal to a colleague or friend from the opposition that he doesn't want cameras picking up and also a player may just be using their shirt to wipe their forehead or similar while talking innocently. (Aware these are unlikely scenarios, but possible... not sure everything a player says should be able to be seen via lip reading)

LOL, last time I booked a player for pulling their shirt over their head for goal celebration he said he was wiping sweat off his forehead. He knew I won't buy it.

I think changing "speaking to" to "confronting" in my post makes it more workable.

The concept is already there, doping masks are banned even though they don't impact performance. Not the same thing but the concept.

I didn't see the incident. The more elite the game, the less change there is I'll be tuned in because I can't be doing with the nonsense
These players have reason to dislike one another. The way footballers behave, it could be a racist incident, or it could be a false claim. The latter is worse than the former IMO, but the two of equal likelihood even though the latter wouldn't be what the authorities go after

" measures to combat players covering their mouth when confronting opponents during matches."
