This is a potent example of the difference between an attacking and defensive free kick at the top level.

There is absolutely no offence here, the way the laws are written you can justify most decisions doesn't mean it was objectively correct.

If anything Maguire is the one who steps in to Jesus and then just falls over.

This ultra safe refereeing is nothing new, its just how top level football is referee'd

Footballers are taught from the age of 6 to feel contact and fall over. It has been going on for far too long for it to get fixed.

Referees are coached to protect themselves by giving safe defensive free kicks. I reckon had this happened by the corner flag it wouldn’t have been given but on the edge of the area it is always going to be a free kick. And I don’t just mean at the top level.
